this exact excerpt Red is the link you need to understand.
I decide sod this, off comes the jacket, sleeves rolled up, ground flattened down a bit, legs moving a little. I shoot like a i shoot pidgeon, im not a driven shot, i dont have the luxury or shooting driven game 50 days a year. Im a poacher, a ducker, my experience is with trying to take the woodie crossing the hedgerow trying not to be spotted, poking and stabbing neat shots rather than the graceful elegant slow long swings of the best shots in the country.
Artful dodger/Scarlet pimpernel.
The style is brilliant Alex love it.

The bit I've highlighted in pokerfan's post has Dinged me Andrew. Can you explain that next please?

I think he means that this passage shows that Alex shoots the same way he plays poker - ie it's the link between this and his poker.

So, by contrast, if Tikay did a post about shooting he would describe how he sat in a field for 14 hours with a bag open waiting for a bird to wander into it and go to sleep.

I'd like to get all indignant & uppity about that, but it's uncannily close to the truth - & what's wrong with waiting for these situations if I still have at least 3xBB?

Alex - thanks for that Post - it's stunning.

Why do you write in that weird fashion about poker, then a totally different style when it comes to Country Pursuits?

poker is a relatively complex game. rather than use 10 word sentances, abbreviations and shorthand make it easier and quicker to read. when you spend a huge chunk of time talking, discussing and learning about the game there are phrases that make discussion quicker and easier and get your point across to the people you are trying to target. For example by saying "a 18/14/3 3bets me pre from my COo and im not sure what to do with KQ because of reverse implied odds oop" i have given all the information needed to the people i am trying to get a response from. Not in a malicious way, but if someone doesnt understand what im on about then they probably dont play the same games i do and therefore their input wont be as useful, i play low and midstakes cash games afterall, wheras many of the pha board are purely mtt players.

countryside pursuits are a different ballgame, they are not my job, they are my hobby and i get immense satisfaction from them on a different level. I guess my writing style is different because of the nature of how i enjoy both, but view one as a technical art that im attempting to master and the other as pure indulgence in the natural world.

basically, i want to sound down with the kids.

Enjoyed the shooting story Alex and didn't mind the length. The Tikay analogy actually gave me a hernia I laughed so hard.

The bit about your writing style is interesting. In a recent PHA thread you posted tl:dr after one of my contributions. I would like to state for the record...poker is not my job, it is my hobby and I get immense satisfaction from it on a different level. I guess my writing style is different because of the nature of how I enjoy it, it is pure indulgence I suppose.

Whereas, if I went hunting I would prob keep it simple and say "I pulled out my gun and shot a goose in the face".

LOL - think someone put those billy-bob teeth in the dogs' mouths - surprised the dogs let them away with it though.

A question for Sov.

How old will the puppy be when you get him?

I made the mistake of getting my puppy far too young and wouldn't want anybody to do the same.

No matter how many things we expose our dogs to and how much we try to teach them there is no way that we can give anywhere near the knowledge that his mother will impart on him in his first few weeks of life.

I got Ronnie at 7 weeks as I was told that he was weaned off his mother and ready to leave for his new home. My friend who had 2 of the litter mates was away for a while around this time so he got his 2 dogs about 4 weeks later. The difference in temperament from the outset particularly where biting/nipping were concerned was unbelievable. The mother is so much better at letting a puppy know what is acceptable and what isn't.

The mother will also teach the pups that humans come first. She already knows this so can let the pups know as well.

I know everybody is eager to get the pup as soon as possible and an extra 2 weeks seems like a long time to wait and after all "what can the pup learn in 2 weeks"

At that age 2 weeks is a large percentage of a puppy's life so they pick up a lot.

Hopefully you're getting the pup when he's at least 8 weeks. Any less than this and I promise you it's a mistake. I'd recommend around 10 weeks before taking him. The difference between 8 and 10 weeks isn't much for you but it's 20% of the dogs entire life experience. This is far better learnt from it's mother.

Obviously this is even more important if you are not a previous dog owner so are inexperienced. Is this your first?

Thank you for the advice. We are getting the pup at around 8 weeks old. The owner wanted us to collect after 6 weeks but due to work commitments etc we couldn't do that.

I didn't realise the difference it could make but can't do much about it now unfortunatly.

It will be our first dog, we've read up lots but don't expect that substitues experience!

We are looking forward to it though! I will keep the updates coming as and when they happen!!

Thanks again for all the help and advice people have offered.

If he's a naturally submissive dog then it won't be a problem.

If he has any dominant characteristics his mother will be the first to put him in his place. It's then over to you to take over.

Ronnie was/is my first dog and he has dominant characteristics. This isn't to be confused with aggression as they are totally different.

The difficult thing is that when you get your pup he will be so cute that you want want to tell him off.

When he runs around in circles you'll think it's cute and laugh. I did. When he nips you'll think it's annoying but nothing more.

When he gets older it becomes more difficult.

The one thing I would say is not to treat him as a cute little puppy but as a dog. If he's old enough to leave his mother he's old enough to behave.

Set out your rules for him and stick to them. Never let him get away with something that you don't want him to do.

If you let him know exactly what you expect from him you should be just fine.

Good luck with him.
