I loved the portrayal of Gypsies or "Pikeys" in Snatch. Some of it was scarily accurate and some was so far off the mark it was hilarious.

Any bits that particularly struck you either way Red.

I like to think that the giving of "dags" with a deal is real.

I would guess that the shitting in front of your own caravan is a bit far fetched

LMAO! Spot on Matt. Gypsies always try to include something they want to get rid of in a deal (Often a dog or some other animal) and they try to pass it off as something valuable.

Hi Red,

Remember the E H Shephard Gypsy illustrations I posted a while ago on your diary. Well I found the book they were illustrated for; a Book of Childrens' Verse by E V Lucas (from 1925 I think), to accompany the following poem.

The Happy Gipsies.

The ordinary merchant
Lives just as you or I;
His house is made of brick or stone,
His rooms are warm and dry;
And if we want his merchandise,
On foot or in a bus
We journey to his shop, because
His shop won't come to us.

But basket-making gipsies
Consider people more;
They harness horses to their house
And bring it to your door;
And in the shelter of the trees
It stands when day is done -
A kitchen, bedroom, workroom, shop,
And nursery in one.

The land is theirs to rove in,
From Cumberland to Kent,
Without the sameness of a street,
The weariness of rent -
They've every day another ride,
Another town to see,
And, in the shade beside the road,
Another picnic tea.

While reading that poem, it seemed to auto scan into my head to the tune of "Ernie" by Benny Hill.

Something to do with the homely style mixed with wider themes.

the memoir posts, and in particular the Lightning Jack story moved me so much that unless at some stage in the next 320+pages I find that you have published your stories I may go on life tilt

Wider audience? I agree. Some Members joined blonde JUST to read Tom's Diary. It's stunning, & we are trying to persuade him to turn it into a book.

Red's family HAVE written two books - "A wanderin of Gypsies" if my memory serves me correct. (I'm not at home, so cannot check).

They are stunning - full of Gypsy anecdotes, many about animals, (som dog stories in there will make you weep), beautiful period pictures, including many of Tom as a little boy.

The books were not widely avalable, but numerous blondes have obtained copies, via Amazon I think. If someone could Post on here the exact titles of the two books, you should be able to trace some copies. You will not regret it. I promise.
