my 2 c on England.

we are not a shit team, we are a good team, not very good, not great, just good and have been at about the same level for years.

we are overhyped by the press any time we qualify for a major tournament, they tell us we should be wining, people believe it and as a result you get the impression of underperforming.

in reality we probably overperform, in the world cup at least. in the last 5 world cups we've qualified for we've finished top 4 once, top eight 3 times and top 16 in the other, on 3 of those occasions only going out on pens.

that's a record that most nations would love to have, hardly underachievement.

in fact you probably have to go back to '58 to find a world cup finals in which we underachieved

Last world cup we underachieve was 70' imo. We were the 2nd best team in that tournament, only the brilliant Brazil 70 team were better than England.

The German team were pretty good... 66 World Cup runners up, 70 World Cup semi finals (knocked out England in QF, Beckenbauer dislocated shoulder)  72 European Championship winners 74 world cup winners.

Come to think about it, ze Germans may have been better than the England team in 1970.

Of course the Germans were a decent side but England should never have lost that qf, 2-0 up and we decided to take Charlton off to rest him for the semis. Which allowed Beckenbauer to play a free role to the run the game. Also Peter Bonetti made an arse of 2 of the German goals, cos Banks was injured.

In the whole tournament we were only team to give the Brazilians a match, we obv beat the German in 66, the team obv went on the decline after this World cup.
