Battle Royale ftw

Obv. It is in my top ten and couldn't see that ever getting made in Hollywood. Incredible concept and was thoroughly enjoyable.

Wacthed Hitchcock last night and it was okay, watchable and gets a firm 6.5. I think the sheer presence of Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Biel made up for any slowness in the plot and gets a firm 6.5/10.

Saw Life of Pi and that gets a 7.5/10. Found it a good story with great special effects but a little slow at times, but it ended with a bang for me, and I got a little emotional, I won't lie.

May have mentioned before but Looper gets an 8/10 for me, thought it was probably the best film of 2012. At the beginning there was no real women involved and thought fuck me I need some eye candy, then bang Emily Blunt graces the screen.

Skyfall is a 7.5/10 too, thought the plot kept me enthralled nicely throughout and had no real lulls for me. Very happy with it.

Really looking forward to watching Gangster Squad as that looks like a little bit of me.

Oh and please watch Drive, with Ryan Gosling as the main lead, loads of HD streams about. Thought it was a 9/10, but may be a bit hit/miss for some.

Drive was brilliant, I highly recommend it too.

It's a modern twist on classic westerns.. 8/10

I also loved it and bought it on day of release. A lot of people I've spoken to didn't like two areas

1) the scenes of extreme violence. Personally I thought this was absolutely needed, it portrays just how dangerous the lead's job is, and added to the tension throughout, the inevitable shit storm was round every corner in this film.

2) the love interest, and the accompanying 'silence' in 1 or two scenes. Personally this worked really well for me and showed how into each other they were? Why should they have to fill the silences?

Oh and get the soundtrack it's superb.

Savages - Great film plus it's got Salma Hayek in it and her lovely breasts (unfortunately not topless). Flowed really well with little or no lulls. Ending could have been better. 6.5/10

Les Mis

I am a huge fan of it at the theatre, so this is a bit biased, but this film is a really good version

First things first, Anne Hathaway is an "out of this world" Fantine performance. Wowzers, simply wonderful. Eddie Redmayne comes close with his Marius too

Hathaway is note perfect, and really gives it some welly, with close up emotions that of course film cameras can highlight in way a stage production never will, but its a feature from a number of the actors that they pretty perfectly balance the singing and the acting. Some of the versions of the songs are as you will not have seen them before

Have to suspend a bit of theatre snobbishness when it comes to Russell Crowe's singing but the whole film is terrific. Visually stunning, great set design because the filmakers let the grime and the dirt in, and some great performances that really bring the film home and help it overcome the occasional mawkishness of the original script

If you are a fan, you'll spend a couple of hours in dreamland with this.

Of course if you hate Les Mis, or musical theatre, then don't go lol

I gave it 8 tighty stars out of 10

Tough school Tightys reviews, 'loved it' and still only gets an 8!

Ever given a 9 or 10?!

Had a few movies stacking up on my PC, so thought I would get a few of them cleared and thought I would start with the older ones.

Unthinkable

From IMDB:

A psychological thriller centered around a black-ops interrogator and an FBI agent who press a suspect terrorist into divulging the location of three nuclear weapons set to detonate in the U.S.

Not from IMDB:

Samuel L Jackson doing what Samuel L Jackson does in stealing the show with a powerful and disturbing performance.

Carrie-Anne Moss plays the voice of reason

Michael  Sheen plays the terrorist.

Good movie that definitely makes you wonder about what goes on behind closed doors...

Snow White & the Huntsman

Sorceress tricked her way into the throne, killed Snow White's Father (King) and takes over the kingdom. Snow White is kept in captivity, but escapes just before she is to be killed.

Huntsman is promised the resurrection of his dead wife for capturing Snow White and returning her to the Queen. Hunstman finds out it's a ruse, then flips sides to help Snow White avenger her fathers death meeting some dwarves along the way who are proper heroes!!

Decent watch albeit predictable and epci inclusion of Ray Winstone and Ian McShane as the dwarves who hopefully will get their own movie off the back of it as they are too good Cheesy

Alex Cross

Alex Cross gets tangled up with a post brain op Jack Shepherd, who is now a serial killer that likes to torture his victims before killing them.

Another James Patterson book made into a movie, but no more Morgan Freeman and I'm not sure the new character quite fills his shoes. Still a decent movie, but r Matthew Fox steals the show as the psychopath who Dr Cross is hunting.

Was strange seeing a heavily trained and tattooed Jack Shepherd running around ironing everyone out. After seeing him trying to save everyone for so long in Lost, this was an interesting role for him and he pulled it off well imo.

Taken 2

Had saved this up as really enjoyed the first one... follows directly from the first where our Heroes fit daughter is kidnapped by sex traffickers ... fortunately said dad is secret agent bad ass and tracks her down and dispatches nasty villain and accomplices with much aplomb.

However nasty villain has revengeful dad and he goes about trying to get hero, hero ex wife and daughter again....

They succeed to a degree just missing the daughter but getting hero and ex missus..our hero manages to escape with help from the daughter but the bad guys get away with ex missus. Personally if it was my ex-missus I'd be on my toes with said daughter wondering what I'd do with all the maintenance money I wouldn't have to pay..

What follows is a rehash of the first film as our hero gets involved in multiple Bournesque hand to hand fights and firefights before finally taking out vengeful dad..

As a stand alone action film Taken 2 wouldn't be too bad... but I was expecting more..a bit more character development of our OCD secret agent... but nothing more was given and little sympathy could be afforded to the main protagonists other than the daughter runs real bad..

Also my suspension of disbelief factor is a high one and ill usually let any old crap go by in the name of fantasy..but first our hero blindfolded and hooded is driven by van and counts his route in seconds with turns etc to trace his steps once he has escaped... he tracks back on foot..eh ? surely his timing would be thrown out ?..also much is made of his daughter learning to drive..an automatic...the tale is set in Istanbul and they acquire a manual taxi which she pilots during an extended chase scene..her mad skillz are akin to a stunt driver on angel dust..she didn't stall, miss a gear and outruns multiple gun toting bad guys with ease...ok she hits lots of things but so would i if nasty men with Glocks and assault rifles were chasing me through the narrow roads of a foreign city and Ive been driving 25 years not 25 minutes..

All in all an OK action flick but overall a disappointment 6/10
