RED DAWN 2012

A remake of the 1984 Patrick Swayze vehicle about America being land invaded by Russia..  This time the villain is North Korea vaguely hinted at being backed by those double dealing Ruskies ( bloody Putin..knew his eyes were too close together ).

Not a lot is explained as to why a country of 35 million would want to take on 350 million yanks in their own back yard even with the dubious backing of the Russians.. or how logistically it would even be possible given the vastness of the USA . Some random references to cyber attacks and some weapon that can take out electrical and power systems but all in all we just get shoe horned into the story and told that however unlikely this is the scenario faced by our heroes.

Our heroes ?  a bunch of high school kids led by one of the older brothers ( eye candy Chris Hemsworth ..for you ladies and Chompy obv ) who just happens to be a Marine on leave..bloody handy that. So our group of adolescents head towards the mountains and embark on a guerrilla war the mujahideen would have been proud of.

What is even more incredible is our Pizza eating video game playing chaps ( and at one point one of them actually says 'we are playing Call of Duty for real ' lololol ) with a few Girlie's thrown in are incredibly adept at handling automatic weapons and blazing firefights..personally at 15 give me a machine gun and a few thousand highly trained troops trying to kill me I'd probably plap my pants and cry for my mummy..but not so your average American student ( and the Yanks wanna ban sales of automatic weapons, shame on them how the hell they gonna repel invaders if they do )

The whole thing starts reasonably but slowly but surely snowballs into a full on flag waving patriotic pastiche.. seriously ! at the end i swear they were gonna start screaming USA ! USA! USA!...lolz

All in all plenty of bang for your buck but ludicrous and lazy.. video on a Saturday night with your mates when you fancy watching things getting killed

5.5/10

Noted.

I've probably watched more films this year than I did in the whole of 2012!

Since the Oscars last week I've got Zero Dark Thirty, Argo and Lincoln to watch as well.

Ha, I don't think it quite matches up with the golden boys in the TV thread though...

Universal Soldier - Day of Reckoning

Lungren and Van Dame are utterly shite. Loads of violence is the only redeeming feature.

Tonight i finally saw Skyfall. Beautifully shot (the scenes in Macau and shanghai, the moors where sky fall is, lush). Craig played the role really well. Bardem equally as chilling/ sinister as no cpubtry for old men, I like the way mendes directed this in a 'hats off' to the tradition of bond movies (humour wise especially) while creating some incredible action scenes, and amazing landscapes. Solid 9/10 for me.

Borrowed my nephew for the Oz prequel.

£5.50 for a waffle with a scoop of ice cream on it? Gtfo Cineworld.

Very promising start but falters once it goes into colour and the middle section is way too long. The ending is fine but Disney films should not be 2h10m. Enough to get 10yos squirming around in their seat and huffing from halfway.

James Franco was decent enough but Mila Kunis was flat from start to finish.

Finley the crappy flying monkey can go into the Jaja Binks/Dobbie hall of fame also. Zach Braff is way better than this.

4/10. Chop 40mins out and maybe 6/10.

After watching skyfall last night, and marvelling at how it's very well shot/directed, it got me thinking of the horror genre for some reason.

Why don't you get really well shot horror films these days? Why are they so cheap and nasty? To be fair I could count the amount of well directed horrors on one hand, ever.

The shining
The exorcist
The Texas chainsaw massacre (tobe hooper)
Misery

All horror films these days seem to be 'from the producers of paranormal activity and saw', and are not scary, do not look very good and the acting is usually terrible, with the 'scary bits' totally transparent before they occur.. So disappointing as all the good directors steer well clear of horror.

Side Effects

Nicely twisty and turny and as good as it could have been.

Rooney Mara really is quite something and Soderbergh even managed to get a decent performance out of Jude Law.

I watched Argo again on Sky box office last night, really is a 9+/10 for me. Does anyone have any suggestions for other films Affleck has directed?
