So I just made a test entry (Which I can still see) in my phone calendar, then I look at my calendar on Google, that entry isn't there.

Where is it?

It's still set to sync?

That's not the point I'm making Kin.

The data is obviously stored on my phone because I can see it. It is not, (At the moment) on the online 'Google' calendar.

That being the case, how did l lose both sets of data, i.e that stored on the phone, and that stored online?

If everything was wiped on the Google side first then the phone would update to match what Google now (didn't) have.

Same if you accidentally wiped it on the phone and it updates google.

I don't think it's possible to accidentally wipe everything from the phone.

But if that were the case, then what's the point of the google back up?

its not so much that google backs it up, it syncs it.. I suppose if you dont have auto sync, then if you did wipe it off your phone then you have a chance to sync again with your google account..

Hmmm....    Seems much safer and just as easy to store the data locally on the phone and back up to the hard drive on my pc.

The problem if you use another calendar that is just on your phone - you lose your phone and it's all gone.

Obviously, what's happened to your google calendar is a bugger - and it shouldn't have happened.  It shows that even if you have your calendar in two locations (one being your phone, and the other being the 'cloud' in this case google's servers), if something goes wrong with the sync, you can lose both sets of data.  There is an option in Google calendar to export your calendar entries, and it looks as though doing that on a regular basis is the answer, and then storing that data on your PC and wherever else as a backup.

Unfortunately, it doesn't help you this time - and I'm sure your confidence in Google calendar is shot as well.

Thats such a shame tom, i have been using google for god knows how long (probably when boshi told me google were going to rule the world) and have never lost a single bit of data/entries

I've never had a problem either, but this has made me rethink my complacency and I'm now in the process of backing up all my gmail (45GB worth in 55,000 emails!) to my hard-drive using Thunderbird.

It's going to take a good few days though Cheesy

Been running this for over 24-hours now, and still got a while to go!  I mis-read the number of emails, it's over 100,000 that make up the 45GB worth.  Should have backed them up long ago, but Tom's problem has highlighted that even though I've gone 7 years on gmail without a problem I shouldn't get complacent.

Looks like we've sorted a solution for Tom going forward.   Still going to use Google for the calendar, and have it sync with the phone, but Tom will be exporting his calendar manually and saving it onto his PC.  That way if the calendar gets wiped again, he can import the exported file and restore all his calendar entries.

Try Rockplayer.
