Morning Patrick.

Do you know Dusty Schmidt? What sort of chap is he?

Morning Tony

this may give you an idea....his alias is Leatherass on Stars

watch from 5.38 in

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ovf103Ax6yU

I actually interviewed him some years ago, but just poker stuff, I was more interested in what he is like as a person, away from poker.

He reportedly made what many might consider a controversial, or perhaps ill-advised, Facebook Post yesterday, which has received much attention. It took me quite by surprise, so I just wondered if Patrick, who presumably knows him "off-table", knew if he was always so strongly opinionated.

I'm chums with Dusty, via our mutual best bud Jared. I was quite surprised by his comments yesterday.

He is a lovely fella in real life, really laid back and unassuming. He is an incredibly devoted family man, which explains but doesn't excuse the comments. Online I think he steps into something of a persona. He has made money being controversial (got sponsorship, his books etc) so I think he is a little bit more trigger happy than most when it comes to stirring up controvsery (I'm not excusing his actions btw, just giving context).

It makes much more sense now Barry, thanks. I still disagree, of course - I imagine everyone would - but it helps to understand why people do & say certain illogical things.

Lovely fella in real life? so being a bell-end online is not part of his life? Hate it when people defend someones character like this, really embarrassing.

Must have fallen asleep for that bit.  Everyone loves an inflammatory statement though.

He must have read my book about cashing in on the grief tourism trade.

I also hate it when people do that, and was NOT defending him, Tikay asked what he was like in-person and I told him, perhaps using 'real life' was the wrong way to frame it.

Well Barry knows him, & thinks that, so it may be that the guy IS "a lovely fella" in real life. I have no idea, & neither do you.

I'm trying to think about these sort of things a little deeper. In my experience, so many people do not express themselves very well in writing, or online. It's too easy just to say he is a wrong 'un, surely?

There is a blonde regular who is THE nicest, & most polite chap, in real life. Online, he describes everyone in the most obscene & inflammatory terms. Is he really a bad person, or does he just have really bad interpersonal & writing skills online? It could just as easily be either.

In case anyone tries to twist this, I believe his statement was very regrettable. It might be because he has poor communication skills though.

Have you not noticed, that nobody on a poker forum these days is described as "OK", "not bad", or "quite good". They are all morons/twats, or legends/bosses. There must be some middle-ground though, some regular guys.....

Do these guys really think villain in a poker hand is a twat because he called & won the hand? No, they say it because they lost, & are a bit cross.

Descriptive skiils of most of us - me especially included - are not as good as they might be. And they can obscure the real person behind them.

I said 'explains but doesnt excuse'

I didnt mean he was doing it for self promotion, I meant that given that he has been trigger happy in the past for self promotion reasons, it has probably conditioned him not to think before he posts controversial things.

Same applies for online and irl imo.

As someone who is also a devoted family man I think his statement is still idiotic.

From stuff he has said previously I do actually think he is the type of person who would make such a statement simply for self promotion.

I agree with you to some extent tikay.  I have also had a learning curve, perhaps not as much as others, when it comes to posting in a way that doesn't get misconstrued.  However, there is absolutely no way that 'I hope someone gets paralysed for the rest of their lives' can be a simple cause of bad communication skills.  Strikes me as someone who is either a) rediculously angry that they played a match that close to his sons death (which seems unlikely from someone who is notoriously level headed) OR b) an inflammatory statement to generate some publicity and get people talking.  Only thing that tilts me is it effin worked!!!!

I don't believe for a moment he wishes the guy to be "paralyzed", nobody in their right mind would.

I'm not defending him, either, that was a truly bad thing to say.

I prefer to believe he was angry, & lacks the ability to explain his thoughts accurately in writing. He means, I imagine, I dislike him intensely", not "I wish him paralyzed".
