They are top 10 imo, 2nd tier of English sides.

Top tier- Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea (though this is pretty much Abramovich money or they would be 2nd)

2nd tier- Spurs, Villa, Man City, Everton, Newcastle and Leeds.

Yeah but why?

LOL @ Chelsea being in tier one.

Should be 4 tiers imo.

Top: Man U

Second: Liverpool and Arsenal

Third: Man City, Leeds, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Sheff Weds, Spurs

Fourth: Chelsea, Sunderland, Everton, Birmingham, West Ham

Having loads of money does not make Chelsea a big club. If Abramovich leaves they will settle back down to their old size, about the same as West Ham, a little bigger than QPR.

Newcastle's 'big club status' stems from the fact it's a one-club city unlike practically any other city in the country.

Norwich City

Leicester City

Camel's list is about right I think

History, crowds, on field success, support outside their home area etc all come together in these tiers

and I think he's right on Chelsea too

Tier 5 is the likes of WBA, Stoke, Wolves, Forest, Derby, Leicester, Probably put Bolton in there, Norwich, maybe Ipswich, Pompey, QPR etc

Blackpool and Wigan don't make the top 5 tiers

I love this discussion, argued for many many years about what a "big club" is.

A provincial City team with crowds 20,000+ for ever. Decent long history in the top flight in 1950s-1970s, yo yo since. Four cup finals, three LC finals, two European entries

Not a big team but one of the bigger medium teams. Same as Forest, Derby and the rest.

Liverpool in tier 1 for me and Arsenal in league 3 with the rest.

So league 1: Man U, Lpool

Tier 2: Man City, Leeds, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Sheff Weds, Spurs

Tier 3: Chelsea, Everton, Birmingham, West Ham,

Tier 4:  Blackburn, Cardiff, Sheff U, WBA, Stoke, Wolves, Forest, Derby, Leicester, Bolton, Norwich, Ipswich,  QPR

I prob leave Pompey w/Wigan/Bpool

and I would add that Forest and Derby could be higher if it was for long term on field success after all there are EC and PL winners there...but for me crowd size is a big factor.

they are up to 30k or so and and to me to be a big team you have to be capable of having crowds of 35-40k ish. Of course stadia is a limiting factor here but even when there was terracing they weren't getting the crowds of the big boys

I think Portsmouth and Southampton are pretty big clubs too, probably deserve to be in tier 4 at least.

Bristol City are a big club in waiting, really fanatical support and a pretty big catchment area.. shame they have a terrible ground and are run by idiots.
