awesome stuff Smiley

We have had a lot of similar stuff but on very different paths...so i have a few questions and again tell me to GTFO if they suck/too personal

1. What motivates you to play poker, you play nearly everyday, what gets you up and drives you to do it?

2. What sacrifices have you made to be a pro poker player, what sacrifices do you think you're going to have to make, and what are you not prepared to give up?

3. Just playing live, how do you manage ur BR and game select?

4. will you ever 3bet me from the small blind @ 50/100 with  three clubs again Wink

I will be railing, gl this weekend if you play x

1) I fucking love it! Could go into way more detail but cba.

2) I've sacrificed living the normal life that was set out for me. I hope I won't ever have to make any sacrifices with regards to relationships and family, but I realise that this may not always be possible. They will always be a priority for me.

3) When grinding, 20buyins is a min. I'm currently rolled for 1/2 but haven't played much yet. I'm super comfortable at 50 1 and would much rather play in a dead easy 50 1 game than a tougher 1 2. I like to dodge tables where there's even one tough spot, as I like to be table captain Cheesy and even a player who I think I could crush, but is aggro and competent will decrease my table edge by being in loads of hands, raising a lot of pots, taking away spots etc etc. I could improve on game selection I think.

4) I will, knowing it's a bad play, then crush your soul oop and show you daaa bluff! / make trips.

Hi Alex,

Like someone said earlier, I had an idea who you were so thanks for confirming with the photo.

Your post is well written but then Posh kids are supposed to be articulate (like me, lol). Keep up the good work.

A couple of your comments are interesting.

You'd rather play in an easier 50p/£1 game which you are comfortable in. To an extent I agree, I play in this game mostly because the sad reality is that is what I am genuinely rolled for. But as I said in an earlier reply to you, the trouble is that the game is too small to make a living from and the best thing about £1/£2 is that the play is, if anything, even worse and the opportunity to make hay with the straddling and deep stacks is enormous...

So maybe mix the two up a bit at selected times.

You said you had a small win playing and were unsure whether to book it or not. Do it mate, I record absolutely every result even from the games I play with my mates in the pub. Profit is profit and loss is loss and you need to keep score for several reasons. You need to know how you are genuinely getting on, you need to be able to spot patterns and you need the discipline that this entails.

It is an irony that only the winning players are diligent about keeping score.

I loved the comment about nine chumps on the final table - I see this so often, maybe not nine but so many terrible players doing well in coinflipaments really tilts me. Luck is a huge factor in tournaments and it seems that you do at least realise this, unlike many.

Good luck with it. Just try and balance this with a normal life. I couldn't stand getting home at 6am and it definitely affected family life -  so be careful.

Two of my closest friends came up from London yesterday to stay with me. Steve and Toby both used to work at DTD and left around the same time as me. Both are absolute legends. Steve was my pro buddy last year and is grinding online MTTs at the moment. Toby is unemployed and finding it impossible to get a job. He is pretty broke, but recently had a nice spin up - he had nothing in his accounts and played some 10cent giveaways. These are 10handed SNGs, 6cents for 1st, 4cents for 2nd. You cannot play with more than $1 in your account. He grinded these until he had $1, then played some 30cent SNGs, then moved up and up and up and had 1100 in a few days. He cashed out and decided to come up to see me which I thought was awesome. Steve came along as a birthday treat for me apparently. Which means no actual birthday present ffs!

Having them here rather stifles the weeks grindage plans but can still play a bit. We all headed to DTD for the £50 6max. This was a really fun tourney. My table had Toby on my direct left (sigh) and Will Fry to his left. The 3 other guys got completely rinsed by us and we knocked out whoever replaced them. Will did own me in one pot though, 5bet shoving me with 65ss. It was a "he knew that I knew that he knew" sort of spot and he just found the final bullet and made the last move. Even so I had 30k at the first break, and I think was chip leader. I then had a really frustrating 4 levels, where I had to raise a bunch of hands like mid-small pairs, KJ QTss etc then have to fold to large shoves vs guys that were never light. It was a bit frustrating and I rotted down to 20k or something.

I got moved tables and during my first hand there was a fairly standard rule dispute concerning minimum raises. The dealer gives the wrong rule but the floor was called where the correct ruling was given. The guy who made the fuss accepts the ruling but says that it must just be this "casino". Will Fry (also just been moved) says its the same all over the world and a few people agree. The guy refuses to back down and says how we are all wrong. Instead of just letting it go I needlessly get involved and make some stupid comments. It really pissed me off the way the guy had no idea what he was talking about and refused to believe someone like Will who has obviously played all over the world.

I find myself in this spot a lot and find it really hard to keep quiet and not get involved. E.g. when you get sucked out on in big pots and the guy comes up with some BS at the end "I had 8 and a half outs so was a 53.1% favourite there" or with ruling disputes its really hard as an ex dealer not to get involved and tell someone what the rule is. Even though I know he's not going to believe me and the floor will come over and give exactly the same ruling in a few seconds anyway. There's no point in getting involved but I always do. Another NYs resolution.

Anyway that was a slightly sour point in an otherwise really fun tourney. I ended up 3bet shoving A8 vs a PLinton open, he snapreshoved with A7 and did a bink and I was out in 14th with 9 paid. He went on to come 2nd grr. Toby also went out in 20th or something, Steve had gone a while ago so we all bricked it. I went to play some 50 1 and had a pretty soft table which was quite a good a laugh. I played really well, bluffed in all the right spots, and made two biggish calls to get me winning £150. It was about 1am and this point and I wanted to chill with Steve and Toby but felt guilty cos this week I was supposed to be grinding pretty hard. Decided that they were the priority this week and that I'd get on it properly next week.

We went back to mine with Jilly and Sean (DTD dealers) to chill. We played one of my favourite games in the world - Perudo. It's like south american liar dice. You get 5 dice each and roll them, only looking at your own. You then make guesses in turn as to the total number of any one number between everyones dice. 1s are wild. E.g. "4 sixes.....5 twos.....5 fives" until it gets high enough where someone says "Dudo" ("I doubt" in Spanish) and if the person has made an incorrect guess then he loses a die, and a correct guess the doubter loses one. I guarantee anyone who enjoys the Maths and psychology of poker will love it. There's loads of metagame and bluffing as well as some interesting game theory spots. I played Toby for £5 a game, pretty confident that I would pwn him. We agreed to play 5 games, I ran terrible in the first 3 and lost all 3, won the final two, then he suggested playing one more for £15. I snapaccepted as I felt I had a pretty big edge Cheesy and won to net a cheeky £10 profit. By 5am I was pretty dead and went up to sleep. Its now 9am and Im wide awake again ffs. Will be playing again tonight but not too much, want to be fresh for the deepstack on Saturday.

Do keep posting and asking questions, I'm really enjoying doing this and hope I stick to it. All the positive feedback I'm getting is a great boost too Smiley Gl all.

Hey, thanks for posting. So you know who I am....who are you, if you don't mind me asking? I like the idea of mixing in 50 1 and 1 2, I think that's what I'll be doing this month. But the deepstacked 1 2 games require a lot more than a 20x 100bb buyin roll I think so I don't think I'm quite there yet. Might need 10k roll to comfortably play my game there. I know they are lucrative and its where I'm aiming.

If a man can't fly a plane, or do a heart transplant, it doesn't make him a chump, an idiot, a moron or a retard, it just means he hasn't acquired that particular skill set.

Don't begrudge the less accomplished players their occasional success. Be glad for them, praise them, congratulate them.

Without them, there would be no game.

I know you know.

It wasn't particularly aimed at you, just a general comment.

It's just that if someone makes a bad play, or (God help him) posts a naive question on a PHA board, an amazing number of 'better' players go out of their way to point out what an idiot he is.

That can't be good for the game.

I would much rather lose regularly to terrible plays than lose because I was constantly outplayed.

Interesting thread so far. A few questions if you don't mind.

- What's the maximum hourly rate would you say is possible in the 0.5/1 at DTD, given the high rake and low buy-in cap? How does this compare to your winrate?
- Same question for the 1/2?
- Do you feel £50 tournaments are worth the time? Even 100% ROI doesn't translate to a high hourly, especially compared to a cash game.
