Kin makes a very good point. Since I have been in Jamaica I have realised that even when i thought I was at rock bottom I was significantly better off than 90%+ of the worlds population and our constant desire to strive for more and more consumer goods isn't that healthy. I agree with Woodsey that that is something that tends to come with age and experience and I don't think it is condescending to say that because things happen in your adult life that make you realise what is important and what isn't and those things are less likely to have happened when you are 24 than when you are 34 or 44. That doesn't make Daves opinion less valid but it does make it more subject to change.
When I was 28 I was a main board director of a publicly traded gaming company and hoped one day to be CEO of that or a similar company and had options and a fat salary and 100+ people working for me. Nine years later I understand how destructive that ambition was to both my mental and physical health and would not go back to that if you paid me a million pounds a year. The way my life is structured now could still be better and i still work too hard largely because I get consumed by what i do and my passion for it but I know that that corporate enviroment is one which is, for me at least, not worth that financial rewards for the toll it takes. Nowadays I still have goals but they are more organic and revolve around my happiness and personal fulfilment. Things like spending a month a year with my parents, reading x amount of books, learning new skills etc but ultimately almost none of them are done specifically to earn more money. That might be a by product but it isn't the goal anymore.

very interesting stuff ..
Back in the day, we paid this guy a pretty large 6 figure sum to speak for 2 hours at one of our events in Orlando - massive draw in the US back then even though our event was mainly targeted at Customer Management professionals rather than a bunch of self-help peeps
Pretty good and inspirational too as it turned out

Tremendous post by redarmi.
Our perception of these things change as our relative wealth moves up and down, and even more so when we have experienced both extremes of the range.
I went busto - proper busto, not a button to my name - in my early thirties. The next few years, whilst I built back to being comfy was far more satisfying and happy than almost any time in my life. The journey back from busto was better than the destination, it really was.
We all see these things different though.
I loved Acidmouse's line, too.

Nonsense.
If only.
I just had to google "adverb" to even know what it was!
This was what it said...
An adverb is a word that changes or qualifies the meaning of a verb, adjective, other adverb, clause, sentence or any other word or phrase, except that it does not include the adjectives and determiners that directly modify nouns. Adverbs are traditionally regarded as one of the parts of speech, although the wide variety of the functions performed by words classed as adverbs means that it is hard to treat them as a single uniform category.
Adverbs typically answer questions such as how?, in what way?, when?, where?, and to what extent?. This function is called the adverbial function, and is realized not just by single words (i.e., adverbs) but by adverbial phrases and adverbial clauses.
I'm still not sure why that means I should have written "different" or "differently" though. Truly.
I have a million stories to tell, & I think the way my mind works means I can make them interesting, worth reading. I am currently grappling with trying to write a book, but it's (for me) impossibly hard. I read a lot, as you know, & I just can't match some of the descriptive stuff, it's beyond me.
I'm currently reading a book by a chap named Ken Payne. He was a rougharse type, but interesting. His book is a good read, too, if a little "light". He seems to have written most of it himself, & he writes exactly how (I imagine) he speaks, which is a truly great gift.
But.......
In between all his raw prose, which is highly enjoyable, he slips in all the "fill", which I know for sure is not how he thinks. One moment he is describing "thieving bloody bookies", the next he comes up with this, which we know full well he never thought, or wrote, describing the atmo in his racehorse stables.....
"......The air was cool and wet and pungent, a heady mixture of damp earth and woodsmoke, of hay, & horses".
Now that PERFECTLY describes the scene. We get it. It is necessary. But I could never find the words to describe it like that in a month of Sundays. I get by, but I can't write like that, because I just don't have the means to transfer my thoughts to paper that well.
I'm not envious of many folks, but Tom (Red) has that wonderful knack, ability, whatever, to do that descriptive stuff, ditto Tighty, & a good few others here. I don't even think they finds it hard - it comes quite naturally to them. Jealous, me? Just a bit. Almost my biggest regret, really.
I was with Vicky Coren last night, & I admire & respect her insanely. Have you read her "For Richer or Poorer"? (Of course you have). I'd give my left arm to have such a writing talent as that. Shame I'm left-handed really.
Here's the really weird thing, too. I instantly recognize bad writing, it jumps off the page to me, but I can't write well myself.
This began as a debate about wealth or lack of it. Like so many things these days, I disagreed or failed to understand many of the views, partly, I suppose, because many of them were presented as facts.
The older we get, the less we understand, it seems to me. Wait until you reach my age, you'll know bugger all by then......

I could have spared you all that bollox Alan, there you go. Kinboshi - who had the good fortune to be educated - neatly proves the point.
