You only lose money with a car, so unless you're going to enjoy driving and owning it you're probably best to get something a bit cheaper to run and own. Plenty of options for reliable cars that will cost a lot less to run.
have to trade the feel-good factor though
do love driving it a lot, and feels good rocking up somewhere in it...(before I dented the rear-left. and scratched the front-right. and the front-left....

That's part of the fun of owning a nice car. Should make you smile driving it.

Also, just lay Liverpool.
/thread
You had better explain to Alex what a
lay
is. A betting lay, I mean.
Sorry. Thanks, all.
Alex, you can explain to me how to rangemerge a blocker-bet for value in 50nl hand histories.
(Please don't!)
only John Black could do that
Don't just throw my name around like that....
Could tho

Not sure how much your budget is for a car, but I would recommend a VW GOLF - It's the same as the BMW, i.e German, and it's probably in the top 3 of safest cars, yes it can be expensive if things go wrong, nowhere near as much as a BMW or merc. As long as you pay for a decent service once/twice a year, and check all your oil/water/tyre pressures, these cars go on forever and generally are VERY reliable, and really are safe on the road. If you wanted speed, then u can still get a GTI, 2.0 or something, really quick and lovely to drive. A 2ND hand one of these can range from £5k to something a bit newer to like £12k.
If u are looking for something economic, I would suggest a Ford Focus. You can pick a decent 2ND hand one up for around £7k, they run REALLY well, are reliable, and are very cheap to repair. When they reach around 70,000 miles, they usually need the cam-belt replacing, so try to look for one that has low mileage, so you can get the most out of it. Again, just make sure your oils/waters/tyre pressures are all regularly checked, then just a yearly decent service, you should have no problems.
Both these cars look suitable for Men to drive.
Make sure you do a detailed search for them, I wouldn't recomend buying from a garage, as the price drops down considerably when you drive it off the forcourt, I would be prepared to travel to see a private car - be shrewd, be clever and above all don't get mugged off.

Also Alex The VW is front wheel drive as opposed to the BMW which, I believe, is rear wheel drive and useless in this snowy weather. Worth bearing in mind but not a deal breaker for someone with your driving skills.

Thanks Dreenie. VW Golf is actually the car I learnt to drive on and my Mum still has it - in fact I was driving it over Christmas and yeh - still love it. It's only a 1.6 engine but it's v pacey, and really enjoy driving it. So I was actually thinking about getting a VW Golf anyway and your advice has confirmed that in my mind, thanks

Im right with Dreenie and her advice. The Golf GT GTDi is the best in the range. An excellent engine. You might pay a little bit more for the Diesel, than its petrol equivalent, but IMO its a no brainer

i was dissapointed to find out a few days ago you had a boy friend. You make for excellent wife material, loves poker, knows cars and cooks some brilliant meals. You are a diamond

Hesitate to disagree with Guy on anything, but given the mileage that Alex is likely to do I can see absolutely no advantage in buying a diesel.
More expensive to buy, more expensive to maintain, and not at all suitable for short trips to DTD and back.
