Interesting article about the Hearn cashcow Matchroom Boxing and the finances behind boxing shows Hearn puts on sky sports.  He writes a column for the DM which i assume is how they got access to this weekend fwiw.

I'm amazed that he seems to rely on each fighter selling tickets personally to his mates at the bottom of the card.

Why? Every smaller promoter definitely does rely on it, Hearn less so. There are very few fighters out there that will sell out an arena on their own (AJ, Haye, Frampton, Warrington off the top of my head). Being a big ticket seller enhances a fighters prospects bigtime, Warrington being the best example of this.

When you say big ticket seller, do you mean big draw for the public, or do you mean selling directly by putting a post up on Facebook to their mates etc? I totally agree that fighters need to be marketable. I'm surprised Eddie minds that the guy in the 8th fight down personally sells 200 or 20 tickets- what does it matter? If he's paying each fighter £1500 that's a drop in the bucket, surely. If one of those fighters goes on to be a headliner, I don't see that will correlate to filling the O2 versus half filling it.

I suppose if you have 7 non-headline fights = 14 fighters, and they each bring 200 mates, that's 2800 people, which makes a big difference in a show that draws 7000 people.

Eddie Hearn called in a hell of a lot of favours to pull off this weekend's world title fights. And he took a loss on the Goodison Park show. He's on record saying they sold 17k tickets and 20k was the break even point. Come to think of it Hearn can't be making much money off of Kell Brook who struggles to sell out in Sheffield.

I mean someone who can sell to their mates etc. The best example of this is Josh Warrington. He was shifting a bucketload of tickets before he had any proper TV exposure. He got on a Matchroom bill, did a load of tickets and then was signed up by Hearn. He has been filling out the Leeds Arena for domestic and European title fights. He is a massive cash cow for Hearn and with some clever matchmaking I'm sure Hearn will get him a winnable World Title shot (not Selby) at Elland Rd which will probably do 30k. Now he's a decent fighter but had he not been a big ticket seller I doubt half of the opportunities he has had would have come his way.

I don't know who the guy is who sold 28 tickets but I suspect he is a big price to be on a Matchroom bill again in the near future. Every ticket sold is $$ in Eddie's pocket.

That's how professional sport works though.  You are there to make your paymaster(s) money.  The more you make them the more likely you are to keep getting opportunities.  The best players don't always make the most money in sports.

My little cash cow Mitchell Smith looks to be off Friday nights undercard. Not that it matters as everyone will be watching France-Romania after which Enzo Mac will be on.

In the early hours of Sunday morning Sky have picked up the Ruslan Provodnikov - John Molina card. Anyone who's never seen the Siberian Rocky is in for a pleasant surprise. Plus the undercard is solid. I've got my eye on possibly the best lightweight out there right now, Dejan Zlaticanin. Then over on the west coast Boxnation have Martinez-Lomachenko.

Enzo's latest IFL TV interview confirmed Bazza's suspicions that there will be a more of an emphasis on a safety first game plan.

Digging a bit deeper, much hyped Chinese superstar Zou Shiming is fighting a Hungarian who looks like a mid pubescent schoolboy. I remember the fella from a Nick Blackwell undercard where Andrew Selby, in just his second pro fight, stopped him in the second round. It was memorable only for the NSPCC jokes. And the Top Rank card is actually in the state of New York.

Makes sense. Enzo should be able to box his ears off. His reputation as a banger precedes him but he has out boxed much better fighters than Kucher. He should make him eat the jab for 12 rounds.

Of all the cruelty to children jokes Frank Warren topped the lot, "Eubank Senior should be reported to the NSPCC if he let's Junior get in the ring with Golovkin."
