What's coming up?

Presumably the Wyndham Golf will play to a finish on Monday, but we only have a tenner at risk, so it won't hurt us either way, though a win would be handy.

Our MOBOT, possibly, has one game left, the Rodwell-less Everton v Man Utd, & we also start our Man Utd "Six on the Bounce" bet in that game, too.

The Cricket will give us a big swing either way, but it won't knock us into red figures even if it goes south. We have £150 @ 19/10 on South Africa.

Finally, don't forget the monster Speedway event televised on SS2 on Monday Evening, Coventry Bees v Lakeside Hammers. Ooohh.

I'm not sure if you caught it yesterday on R5 but there was a 2-hour precis(not sure if that's the correct word) of the Olympic Games' commentaries just after lunchtime, it was fantastic.

I just had it on my radio as background while I was concentrating on other stuff.

They did the same or similar today whilst I had a lot of driving to do.  Must admit I teared up on a few occasions.

Oh my word! Some SPOTY stuff for you here. The article below is interesting but the main article isn't really relevant.  Hidden away is a small story that Simon Cowell is going to be cashing in on the Olympic feel good. He is doing an X-factor special with four guest mentors. Those being Wiggins, Hoy, Ennis and Farah.

This could be a huge gamechanger. Now contenders for SPOTY are going to have X-factor mania/fans/and the twitter followers of the judges supporting them. Everyone loves Jessica Ennis. I also think shes the one most likely to stay involved after there episode.

Don't really see how this could be a 'huge' gamechanger.  Possibly if one of the big two of Ennis and Wiggins hadn't been involved it could have had a minor effect.  It won't raise any of their profiles for the simple reason that they can't be risen any higher

In terms of the main article I don't really understand why anyone should automatically get an honour and think the honours system in general should be used for more than just an add on to the sporting acheivement.  An Olympic medal gives the receipient a place in the public eye and  imo what they then do with that opportunity to help others is what should be the criteria for a further honour.  For example even if Beth Tweddle had finished last in her event I think she is a good candidate for high honours because her success as a sole trailblazer at the time inspired a whole generation to take up gymnastics in this country and we are seeing the benefits of this now.  You could argue similar things about Chris Boardman in cycling.  Also perhaps time to look at those behind the scenes.  Dave Brailsford for example deserves a knighthood more than anyone else involved in British sport at the moment imo.  The "inspire a generation"slogan is much quoted but the effort in a lot of cases is not just about the athletes.  I know it will never happen but some kind of token honour for every games maker would be a lovely (and justified) way to use the honours system.  Thread derail over.

Was more to do with the x-factor bit. First website I'd spotted it on today.

Think Ennis Benefits from it as she fits the X-factor viewing demographic.  Can't imagine Hoy or Wiggins coming out saying that there perfect Saturday night entertainment is a night in infront of the telly watching the show. Farah lives in the US so can imagine him being the same. Ennis on the other hand I can see saying she likes nothing more than listening to Bieber, One Direction and Take That.

X-Factor live final and SPOTY are happening around the same time.

Last year Cav won with 50% of the vote and got 160k. I'm guessing X-factor voting numbers are ten times that. You have Simon Cowell who is obsessed with winning and having no scruples in exploiting fame. Out of the four Ennis seems the most likely to fill the Cowell mold of someone that he could make millions from. It wouldn't surprise me if we end up seeing an Olympic Athlete charity song be Xmas number one this year after seeing this announcement. I think Simon Cowell is also probably the only person in the UK who would actually be able to manipulate the British public to vote for who he wants to win. I think of the four he's most likely to favour Ennis.

Little makes me more annoyed but yes it will probably make a difference.

The man I hold singularly responsible for the breakdown of society by convincing the masses that their opinion matters. Now we have 200 comments on the bottom of every news story:

Woman visciously assaulted

Terry in Blackpool: "That's terrible"
Cheekymunkie52: "No one should ever be assaulted"
WhiteVanman in Essex: "Apart from peedos, cheekymunkie"
Cheekiemunkie52: "Oh yeah forgot that lol Wink"
Dave in the Valleys: "I'd still give her one"

The only thing preventing all of these numbskulls voting for the SPOTY they're told to by Simon Cowell is the fact that, mercifully, I've made them up.

The real ones might well still vote.

In all seriousness, there will be crossover in the Venn Diagram of SPOTY voters and XFactor voters, but it must lead inevitably to some level of influence.

I'm not a cricket fan, but this has been a great test match.

Yes....brilliant match.

At tea, looking good for Fred, with England playing shots looking for the miracle win.

Whoever decided this should be a 3 test series needs sacking. Best series since 05 ashes

Top top game, two very good sides

SA went 2-9 this morning, and 1-10 mid afternoon, and squeaked home. Just as well tikay wasn't around to sweat it!
