Agree with Keith that tieing up the bankroll for that period is not great because of the money you could have earned turning that money over in that period but seems a decent bet and echo what a great first post it was.

Given the number of potential captains in waiting, I thought there was an understanding that now you only got another shot at being captain if you'd lost first time round - that if you'd won then you'd had your fun and so someone else gets a go.

Hi Fellaini85

When is the 2014 captain announced (going on previous Ryder Cup cycles)?

When would the bookies pay out, on that announcement?

I'll go and look and see how the captain is chosen myself, so no need to ask that...

Lyle is certainly not popular in PGA circles, too outspoken. Monty its been said above

It's how long the money's tied up for, I am interested in....

EDIT you say . This is normally announced around December 2012/January 2013, so it would mean tying up your money for a couple of months but I believe it may be worth it.

ok, not so long then

I don't follow these things closely, but i thought Lyle had been making attempts to smooth stuff over during the last few years?

Also, the announcement of choice of captain doesn't actually give him the job. Wouldn't be surprised if they settled the market when the first ball was struck in 2014.

thanks

if that is the case (as to when they settle) that's obviously the main drawback to any thread now

Bit of detective work needed Fellani85....

Thanks for the replies, I agree with the comments re: when the market will be settled. Waiting 2 yrs for a payout on a 2/1 isn't really feasible. My money is already down, but I have emailed William Hill, so will let the thread know their response.

There has been some comments to suggest that maybe 2/1 about McGinley is fair, but maybe not strong enough for a thread bet, which is fine.

But I do think the market is appealing as we all seem to agree that Monty should be much bigger and Clarke's comments surely make him an unlikely choice. That takes out a big chunk of the market, so maybe Bjorn at 10/1 is likely to be McGinleys biggest threat.

I am happy to be proved wrong, but firmly believe that this is McGinleys only real chance of being named Captain, as his profile is very low in America. So is unlikely to be chosen for an away competition, I think this will be a real kick in teeth if he is overlooked for this gig having served his time through vice captaincies and seve trophys etc.

A link to an article about McGinley's prospects attached below, I quite like this part of the story; "the true driving force behind McGinley’s case is his forensic attention to detail. He has studied every captain he played for and against, tapping into their psyche to form the image of the perfect Ryder Cup leader."

All good debate regardless.

Relatively interesting bet I have had today which I think is worthy of consideration although would prefer input of others who know tennis better than me before a bet from Fred.

Sarah Erani and Roberta Vinci over 21 games @ 1.95 with Pinnacle.

These two are best friends and doubles partners and practise together every day so my thinking is that this could go a long way because they know each others games inside out.  They have played together five times with the last couple on clay going to Errani but she is a much better clay court player especially this season and vinci withdrew in the second set once.  I think their three meetings on hard courts are relevant of which two have gone to three sets and over the three there is an average of 24.66 games.  Seems a decent spot to me.

Any views on this from anyone?

Daily Report as @ 0810, Thursday September 6th

We were totally inactive yesterday - no new bets placed, & none completed. No aged bets completed, either.

I managed to be absent, & miss, two tips, & whilst I don't know if I would have backed both, I'm sure I would have backed one, which looked good. Both lost, so that, for Fred anyway, was a right result.

The ODI between England & South Africa ended up as a thumping win for the visitors, and Amla, with his almost Bradman-esque beard & batting technique, was top scorer, @ 11/4. Nice.

We welcomed a new blonde to Fred, “Fellaini” (presumably a Blue?), who has lurked for some time & now joined the party. Cracking first Post by him (more on which later). It is important that this thread is not just the “Elders” dominating things, their role is to help steer us mugs,  which they do superbly, but widening the thread base by getting more regulars to contribute is key.

In Cycling, we had THE most extraordinary day. Our man, after seemingly dictating matters comfortably for two weeks, suddenly got absolutely blown away by Contador, who totally crushed. Maybe that was Contador’s game plan, to strike suddenly, I don’t know, but it looks like he has killed our bet. We’ve had incredible fun following it, many of us have had our first taste of Grand Tour Cycling, so we had tremendous value for our little tenner.

To get some feel of how decisive yesterday was, the odds 24 hours ago, as reported here, were 1/6 our chap, & any price you like the rest.

Today? Contador 1/50, our man 50/1……!

Just when we were getting ready to collect, the wheels fell off big time.

Nice bike, too – doubt there’d be much change from £200 if you wanted one of those.

Enneffell began, Cowboys @ Giants, but we had no financial interest, in a game in which the pre-match prelims were dominated by the Witten “will he, won’t he?” We could have exploited that knowledge if we did but know.

When I first began taking an interest in horseracing, back in the mid-sixties, something called “The ITV Seven” was on TV every Saturday afternoon. This man was the Course Commentator, & he was one of the great influences on me – he spoke so well, so gently, so humbly.  In fact, he had been a successful jockey before that, & went on to become a very influential man. His ability to be critical & to engage in robust debate in a manner which was polite, civil  & effective, is almost a lost art these days.  Proper man him.
