T20WC Report

A disjointed rain affected day

South Africa looked as impressive as a 8 over slogging contest could allow, winning by a mighty 32 runs over Sri Lanka to go through top of group

The West Indies scored over 190, and looked to confirm what we all thought, they have batting firepower to match anybody. Then Australia set off like a boomerang on fire and were ahead when rain intervened and Messrs Duckworth and Lewis settled their result in their favour

Australia win the group and West Indies and Ireland play off for second in group on Monday. Just to stick it in the ICC's eye *, Go Ireland.

Tomorrow, the rather pointless (in a sense that irrespective of group postion some super eight groupings were decided pre-comp*) early matches continue

11am NZ play Pakistan. Two slightly under the radar sides

http://www.oddschecker.com/cricket/international/twenty20-world-cup/new-zealand-v-pakistan

NZ are a tempting 13/10

3pm England play India

http://www.oddschecker.com/cricket/international/twenty20-world-cup/england-v-india

England a tempting 11/10

Both tempting in the sense that they are even games, and in these go with the value, in my opinion

* From an ICC perspective the 2007 World Cup was a disaster. The pre-competition draw had been randomly done using warm balls had ensured that India would play Pakistan after the group stages. A massive money-spinner was ensured, and a sub-continent girded its loins in anticipation, whilst at Star TV in India advertising executives put their rates up, contacted Sahara, Coca Cola and the like and raked in the dosh.......

Bad weather and sloppy performances saw to it though that India were eliminated, Pak went out and the TV companies had paid fortunes to televise, and the advertisers had maximum exposure to...Ireland v Bangladesh. A cricketing minnow and a cricketing minnow where all the consumers are skint (Ireland was soon to be skint too, but in 2007 they avoided that)

Mark my words, never again will any ICC competition produce a scenario where India are ever likely go out early ever again.

Hence the format of this where two of England, India and Afghanistan go through and India are allocated a group for the Quarters pre-competition.

No further bets today

Tilly Dilly scored a duck. Not good

Australia's innings rained off. Not good

We await Mr Kohli tomorrow

Very nice find Camel.

Brighton beat both Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley comfortably and both of those beat Birmingham comfortably.

It will be nearing 4/7 come weekend, I am sure!

Doubt it will be that short!

1.9ish is the best we can hope for.

2012 UCI Road Cycling World Championships, Valkenburg in the Netherlands.

Sunday 23rd September Elite Men Road Race. 267km. Weather forecast, dry.

The route this year favours riders who can ride the Classics. Crucially the finish will about 1.5km after the Cauberg climb where the Amstel Gold Race finishes each year. Over 200 riders, narrow roads & with teams attacking from the get go, it’s a difficult & unpredictable race to predict.

A quick review of some of the fancied riders. Spain & Belgium look to have the strongest teams.

Philippe Gilbert (Belgium) is favourite. Primarily from having won two Amstel races. But this year has been a lean year for wins compared to 2011 where he was picking up victories with ease. Two stage wins in the Vuelta suggest his form is returning. Price too short & not a bet for me anyway as the finish after the Cauberg is too long for him imo.

Tom Boonen (Belgium) currently 3rd in the UCI World Tour Rankings behind Wiggins & Rodriguez. Winner in this years Tour of Flanders & Paris-Roubaix. He has been training on the route in a race simulation behind a motor bike. Price of 18/1 or there about is fine.

The Spanish team are packed with lead riders. Valverde, Contador, Freire, Rodriguez & Sanchez. Parcours suits Valverde. Not writing them off, but too many chiefs.

Italian team are young & strong, with a focus on lead rider Vincenzo Nibali. Inexperience & no radios will make it hard to control the race.

Peter Sagan (Slovakia), has had a cracking year, but fear his form has dropped since the TdF. Lack of a team doesn’t help his chances. In a recent interview he did not consider himself a favourite.

Edvald Boasson Hagen (Norway), Simon Gerrans (Australia) & John Degenkolb (Germany) all have the ability to feature, but I have some reservations.

Not for Fred, but my banzai bet. Tejay van Garderen, average season spent as apprentice to Cadel Evans at BMC Racing. Impressed at the TdF. A few interviews have hinted that he may have targeted the Worlds & has kept a low profile. A strong time trialer (4th here at the Worlds) & also good on the climbs. A breakthrough ride on the world stage is due. 200/1 is available (May be I’m missing something but I would have him in the 50/1 region).

Apologies for the long way of getting there  Smiley but after a weeks pondering & dithering...

Recommend: £10.00 Tom Boonen 18/1.

Close fight in the UFC between Johnson and Benavidez, as anticipated. Have our guy up 2 rounds to one going into the 4th. Benavidez on top in this round though.

Looking at the Christmas markets already, having done nicely out of random book/video game lists in recent years.  No.1 book doesn't seem to be available at the moment, but I saw something of interest in the No.1 toy list from William Hill.

http://www.oddschecker.com/specials/other-specials/christmas-specials/christmas-number-one-toy/winner

The Leap Pad smashed it up last year and basically sold out everywhere, and there is a new version set to cause a similar frenzy this time around.  This market is apparently settled on the listed toys only as reported by Hamleys, and oddly I can't even find the Cabbage Patch Dolls (2nd fave) listed on their website. Regardless though 3/1 seems a huge price when Paddy Power offer only 1/4 on the same toy being Irish No.1 toy.

Bit of a random one but would recommend £25 @ 3/1. (I reckon it could end up odds on soon)

Edit - early write-up here comparing Hamleys list and popular Mums Choice list - http://www.christmastoylist.co.uk/blog/mums-choice-top-christmas-toys-2012-announced/
