Snooker update
Lisowski beat Wattana 10-4 and is now one match away from the Crucicle, and into 50-1 for the overall too too. Plays Feargal O'Brien in the final qualifying round and I have him favourite to progress
Maflin beat Steve Davis 10-7 and now plays Ebdon. Although Davis is not a heavy scorer these days, Maflin overcame the tactical game and some of the potting, break building was brilliant. He remains 500-1, which is fair enough. very much a boom and bust player, but when he's hot he's very good
I am pretty bullish that both might give us a run at the Crucible, depending on the first round draw
McGill is struggling, 7-2 down to Lawler after the first session. That match was not live streamed, so no comment really apart from a shrug.
Tomorrow there is a stand out in the Qualfying rounds for anyone who cares
Dave Harold, who makes Peter Ebdon look like a Jimmy White, plays Alfie Burden
Burden is talented, rising through the rankings and a heavy scorer. Harold is falling through the rankings and should get out-gunned notwithstanding a good tactical game. Burden is 11/10, Harold 4/5 best.Prices are the wrong way round imo.

I like Lynn and Henley in the top debutant market. I have to confess I don't 100% understand the maths of each way betting in terms of when to take one over the other when it is close like this but on this occasion I think I prefer the extra place because there are a few in that market that really are a huge price. The Chinese kid, for example, only hits it 250 yards off the tee apparently. He literally is a million to one. Olesen might be 9/1 to win but his place odds are not a normal proportion of that because there is a good chance he blows out and isn't fit. I don't really agree we can eliminate 3G because it is a fairly weak field for this bet (I couldn't have him for the tourney proper of course) and his distance is such an advantage here. Henley looks the real deal to me and he has a great tee time. I haven't backed him but I wouldn't be amazed to see him competitive in the tournament proper. The each way seems a steal to me. Lynn I have backed for the tournament proper at 650/1 so I guess I have to like him in this spot too although the difference in outright prices means I have to prefer Henley.

I think Sheff Utd are a million to take on the Coyles, mcleish type. Warnock and the chairman fell out once before tho it does look a great spot for both sides at least until the end of the season. More likely we look at the cheaper options short term, maybe Chris Morgan to tide us over to the end of the season.not a great spot tho really given what's at stake in the promotion race.
I wouldn't take a short price about anyone tho given the chairman thought it perfect natural to hire an ex Sheff Weds captain last time.
Anyone know what Jack Charlton is doing these days?
John Pemberton is a decent bet. Lots of good kids coming through at Sheff U, such as Maguire and the keeper George I forget his surname, and Pemberton has not only done a good job with the 19s (lost to Man U in the Youth cup final in 2010 iirc) before going to Forest but also knows plenty of the players at the linked clubs in Hungary, China etc
His son is currently captain of the United academy side, and he lives in Sheffield
Furthermore, he's going to be popular with supporters, unlikely to rock the boat with the chairman.
The chairman point is important as I know there's not a lot of cash to transform the squad..eg they were unable to meet the loan wage requirements for Paul Gallagher when they had him on loan for a while, he wanted to stay, Wilson wanted him to stay but Chairman wouldn't stump up. Logically, building from within via getting the kids coming through is crucial
Would be far more likely to get the job at the end of the season if United don't go up, than if they do go up
Pemberton is a juicy 16/1, which tempts, though I assume we would be severely restricted to small money. The caveat is that the Market is next PERMANENT Manager, and that is a different thing altogether.
Getting the Caretaker role is one bet
, getting the Permanent job another.

Confirmed: Dave Harold is the most boring player in the history of snooker.

obviously very careful in these markets, bet for tiny money only etc etc
but if I was Sheff U Chairman given their situation and requirements, he'd bet on my list far more so than a "profile" "multi job" manager
their kids need to be brought through asap

Pemberton would not be a caretaker though. Morgan is a caretaker
Pemberton is currently at Forest, doing the Youth role head hunted from United

Kedwall/Kedwell was unlucky ta. Unlucky that he's a bit too fat and the manager doesn't like him.

Scored the goal that got them promotion at the weekend though. Hopefully won't score a goal to relegate us in a couple of weeks...

He would be a really popular appointment, I'm not sure how the relationship between chairman and pembo is. He did look to have a great chance of the managers job before Wilson and then decided to go to Forest. Could easily be Morgan till the end of season and pembo full time next year, 16/1 isn't badl tbh but would really need to know if pembo would come back to work for the chairman again.

Sorry Tony, can't quote here.
David Lynn would be one as you are betting the current BF price ew. Henley and Coetzee look solid tho Coetzee might be in the wrong side of the draw.
piercy would be a fancy if he was in a bit better form and is drawn in Tigers group which might not be ideal.Donaldson sounds short of practice, wirichant played well in the US last month but would prob err on the side of fluke.Grace looks a decent runner but out late.
Potter and Peterson out early, Potter a bit of an enigma, Peterson ran top five in the US Open last year and looked a decent player but that could be a fluke too, played a bit if lower grade stuff but still got time to improve as a player.
I bet the top three and had a smaller bet Peterson as he might be difficult to pitch but open to other thoughts for Fred if anyone likes something.
Laddies prices........
Coetzee 7/1
Henley 7/1
Lynn 12/1.
Am thinking something along these lines.....
Coetzee £15 EW
Henley £15 EW
Lynn £10 EW.
That make any sense?
I need to decide sharpish, I need to get to bed, & will be offline until early afternoon tomorrow.
I'll proceed as above unless advised otherwise.

Is there another Alfie Burden Rich, or is this the one who's about my age?
When I was playing a fair bit, the lad I practiced with used to knock about with him at the pro-ams. Good player then, but a nutjob by all accounts and didn't think he had ever set the world alight*
*I've not followed it much beyond the big comps since 2008
Jeez my paper-round was tough, he's 4 years older than me
