The vast majority of the best-backed teams all won on both Saturday and Sunday, leaving bookies weeping.

Coral described the losses as the industry's "heaviest ever" across a single weekend and compared the situation to the one in 1996 when Frankie Dettori famously went through the card at Ascot, winning every race and putting some layers out of business.

Simon Clare, of Coral, said 14 of the firm's 15 best-backed selections won on Saturday. At Sky Bet it was nine of the top 10.

    Premier League

Stoke City    3 - 5    Liverpool
Newcastle    0 - 2    Man City
Man Utd    2 - 0    Swansea
Cardiff    0 - 2    West Ham
Southampto    1 - 0    West Brom
Tottenham    2 - 0    C Palace
Fulham    1 - 4    Sunderland
Everton    2 - 0    Norwich
Hull City    0 - 2    Chelsea

    Premier League Results

Coral alone saw 50 customers win £2,000 or more on accumulators for which the stakes were between just £1 and £20. Sky Bet reported one 15-fold costing them £72,000.

Many accas ran through to Sunday when two more favourites - Manchester City and Liverpool - both came good for punters.

"Based on our losses, the UK betting industry will have lost over £25million in 48 hours," said Clare.

"These are the biggest losses that the betting industry has suffered since Frankie Dettori rode seven winners in an afternoon at Ascot in September 1996, and it's not even over yet as there will be many more accumulators still running on to Arsenal tomorrow night."

Sky Bet head of football Paul Wiggins said: "It's fair to say it's been a huge weekend for punters.

"Looking at the fixtures, I thought there was a chance we could get a couple of results to go our way but it hasn't worked out like that at all."

William Hill's Rupert Adams was trying to stay positive, adding: "It has been a black armband weekend for the bookmakers but that is the game we are in and we look forward to next weekend when we might just win some back.

Manchester City's 2-0 win at Newcastle took them back to the top of the Premier League table and they ended the day at a best of 11/10 (Betway) for the title. Several better-known firms are odds-on.

    Premier League

1    Man City    47
2    Chelsea    46
3    Arsenal    45
4    Liverpool    42
5    Everton    41
6    Tottenham    40
7    Man Utd    37
8    Newcastle    33
9    Southampton    30
10    Hull City    23
11    A Villa    23
12    Stoke City    22
13    Swansea    21
14    West Brom    21
15    Norwich    20
16    Fulham    19
17    West Ham    18
18    Cardiff    18
19    Sunderland    17
20    C Palace    17

"Manchester City seem to be coming good just at the right time," said Coral's Tim Reynolds. "Their away form has improved dramatically after a rocky start and with Sergio Aguero back fit, the title does look like it's City's to lose."

Manuel Pellegrini's men lead Chelsea (3/1, general) by a point and Arsenal (11/2, BetVictor) by two, but the Gunners can go back to the summit by beating Villa on Monday.

Liverpool also won - 5-3 at Stoke - to maintain their title bid. They are 9/1 (general) to win the championship for the first time since 1990.

The victory lifted the Reds back above local rivals Everton and into the top four. They are now odds-on across the board to finish in one of the Champions League spots. BetVictor will give you 8/11.

Luis Suarez scored two in that game to take his tally to 22 for the Premier League season - that's nine more than his closest rival, Sergio Aguero.

His hot run of form has killed the top scorer betting - the Uruguayan is now 1/16 with Sky Bet and it looks only a matter of time before a firm pays out.

Those bookies woes would be many times worse if Cardiff had beaten West Ham. That was the saver.

They wont get any sympathy, nor should they, but they have certainly lost a tidy sum on Football this weekend. They'll get it all back, of course.

They want every tabloid reader to download the app and play along next weekend, no doubt.

That'd not exactly send the right Marketing message, now would it?

"We lost the lot" works rather better. They rarely get the chance to say it though.

This tweet summed it up quite well i thought

Lads, Coral, Will Hill and PP make combined annual profits of over €1bn.Don't patronise us by crying about a bad weekends soccer results.

I am sure Simon Claire will still be on atr in the week quoting mythical amounts laid on the days racing and advertising "price bombs" (for a max of £40 to 0.0001% of customers)

They are not - they are simply advertising, & free advertising at that.

You'd hardly expect them to say "we got the lot again this weekend, as we do 9 weekends in 10" would you? They'd have no customers left!

Advertising that they lost a few bob is simply commercial common-sense. You can win

Losing weekends are good for business. On multi-media platforms, those winnings soon find their way onto the Slots & Poker sites. Monday's Arsenal game will be a huge betting event, as punters have full pockets.

Depends who you said it to.

I know if a biggie started to do that, I would prob try to win as much as I could from them.

I expect a few others here would also rise to the bait!!

Probably the last chance to have a crack at Paddys offer.

Go with Demarius Thomas @ 8/1 and a flyer with Montee Ball @ 16/1.

What do you think of 18/1 (1-4) about Suarez for top goalscorer?

Smarter guys have any thoughts on this?

Surely he's in with a shout if he stays in the prem?

I would expect City to have a few players in the mid teens, the same at Chelsea and that would leave Van Persie in a United squad without the don running things.

SCANDAL ALERT!!!!!!

Searching for when I would have placed my Suarez bet and found this!!

Looks like Tightys "extraordinary" thinking, was plagerism!!!

How ironic I post this as Sherlock is on the TV!!

Even more respect for Mr Marky for not bringing it up when all the praise was being lavished on Mr End.

A reverse inverse Big Adz!
