on the subject of the snooker (and i agree Ding/Cahill was great drama, it was like watching a Shakespeare tragedy play out on the baize)

the last 16 is as follows

113    Neil Robertson       v       Graeme Dott
114    Stuart Bingham       v       Ricky Walden
115    Anthony McGill       v       John Higgins
     116    Matthew Selt       v       Ronnie O'Sullivan

117    James Cahill       v       Mark Davis
118    Judd Trump       v       Rod Lawler
119    Shaun Murphy       v       Marco Fu
120    Stephen Maguire    v       David Morris

very lopsided draw because Selby and Ding were in the bottom half and have both been knocked out

http://www.oddschecker.com/snooker/uk-championship/winner

In my mind i had the winner of Murphy/Fu as having a real shout to win the bottom half and was tempted by Fu e/w at 25s

not sure if bobby1 or any of the snooker crew had any thoughts on this

They'll never get someone involved in trying to revamp both snooker and darts again.

Which one is he, btw? Left or right?

Ha! Never thought of that - he was a sort of early day version of Hearn I suppose.

In those days, Hearn was in Snooker, but not much else, it was only later he built his Matchroom Empire, & when Sky Sports was created, that was his big opportunity. I know both Eddie & Barry reasonably well, & like them, which is not a very popular position to take these days, lol.

One assumes the "left or right?" question was rhetorical, Mr Posh Bloke.

I don't know Eddie really well, but got to know him when he used to run the poker with Marty, and am probably one of the few with a similar stance to yourself. Guess we both better wear our bodyarmour, if we're ever in the Camel's company when they're mentioned Grin

You mentioned Virgo earlier, too. I remember dad had him at the club for an exhibition about 20/25 years back, and he was the perfect professional all night. Well, until dad put one of the younger players in the club on 2nd, because he had to go home early(ish)

Long and short of it was, hebreaks off, kid makes a century, and Mr Virgo spends the rest of the evening looking like he had been sucking a lemon!

Exactly that really. I had a lot of dealings with Eddie in Poker, & he was always very warm & polite to me.

I had a formal business Meet with Barry a few years back, & his enthusiasm & energy amazed me. Greedy bugger, for sure, but he had all the stats at his fingertips. He had just announced that year's Premier League Darts, & he had all the ticket sales, v last year etc, off pat, down to 2 decimal points, it was incredible to watch him. I bumped into him in Vegas one year, he was promoting or running some Darts tourney there, & he asked if I'd like a seat.

"Ooh, yes please Barry" I said, duly flattered at his generosity, & that he remembered me.

"That'll be $95" he said, quick as a flash, lol.

I know Katherine better really, she's a lovely kid.

I suppose it's a bit of the "wow, I know a famous bloke" thing really.

Ha!

It's true though, or is for most if us, we meet a very famous or wealthy person & we do tend to get a bit more onside, just because "we met him" sorta thing.

I'm well aware that the Hearns are not likely to top too many popularity polls, but it won't change my personal view. I'm just a celebrity tart I suppose.

I might like John Terry if I met him......

Tal wanted us to consider Spurs tonight at 8-1

Sporting Intelligence profer the following

not that any of the previous 22 games have any relevance to this

but are we really expecting this Chelsea team, terrific back five, wealth of midfield options, no Costa tonight to slip up here, such that they could be laid, or we should back the away team?

Personally no, but if people agree with Tal we can get on

http://www.oddschecker.com/football/english/premier-league/chelsea-v-tottenham/winner

the Opta facts are as follows

" Chelsea have won 28 and lost just one of the last 34 Premier League games at Stamford Bridge.
Tottenham have lost just one of their last six Premier League away games (W3 L1).
Tottenham have not won away at Stamford Bridge in any competition since February 1990 when Gary Lineker scored the winning goal in a 2-1 win (W0 L17).
Jose Mourinho's side have kept 11 clean sheets in their last 14 Premier League home matches.
Chelsea have lost only one of their last 17 Premier League London derbies (W12 ); this coming in a 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace in March.
Chelsea have won all three Premier League games that they have conceded the first goal in this season.
Chelsea and Spurs have both won the most points from losing positions in the Premier League this season (9).
Didier Drogba has scored three goals and assisted four more in his last eight Premier League games against Spurs.
Chelsea are now unbeaten in all 20 of their competitive matches in 2014-15 (W15 ).
Spurs have won three of their last four Premier League games (W3 L1); this after winning just three of their previous nine in the competition under Mauricio Pochettino (W3 L4)."

Credibility= Zero.

I'll assume this is a joke, otherwise there is no need for a pop

Peter taylor died in 1990, if you are 35 or under then you'd have been quite young when the clough/taylor partnership was doing great things and might not know of him

I'll be honest and say it's a fair criticism from Adz. I had heard of Peter Taylor but couldn't pick him out of a crowd of one.

But then Adz is a gooner, so that takes his points off him.

Wow, the joke is on me actually, I never realised Peter had passed on. Still, it was only 24 years ago I suppose, news takes a while to reach me.

Did anyone catch the Ding v James Cahill match in the UK snooker Championship?

Cahill had a red over the pocket and just needed a colour to probably win the match 6-1 but didn't manage to get on the colour and Ding nicked it and came back to 5-4. Cahill who is the under 21 World Champion but looks 16 then went 68 in front with 59 left on the table in the 10th frame and thinking he had won tried to smash a red in from about 6 inches but rattled it coz he hit it too hard then seemed a bit miffed Ding hadn't shaken his hand to concede the frame and match. Ding pots the reds he can and gets a 4 point snooker and a free ball on the last one and makes a superb clearance to win the frame by 1 point to make it 5-5.

Cahill who has been sitting in his chair with a tissue over his eyes as Ding cleared up leaves the arena looking terrible and it is so tense that the ref holds up the start of the last frame as he needs to change his bow tie because there is sweat dripping off it. Ding gets in and makes 30 odd but misses an easy red when trying to play a cannon and Cahill  makes a 50 odd break when not really on anything properly including an amazing back double red into the middle bag which Davis in comms is almost shouting at him not to take on. It reminded me of the great 69 break Alex Higgins made in the 1981 World Championship semi final against Jimmy White. Cahill gets back in after a safety battle and wins the frame with more good pots to win 6-5 at 00.40 in the morning almost 3 hours after he needed a red over the bag and a colour to win 6-1.

If you can get the highlights of the game and especially the tenth frame then it is well worth watching. The break he made in the last was fantastic under the pressure he must have been under after throwing away the match twice already. Think he is a name to remember going forward too.

Eurosport 1 showing the highlights now and its 5-4 at the mo tho the condensed version might not capture it fully.

I've still got the hump after they made the UK no longer first to 10 format.  However, I saw Cahill was 5-1 up and I woke in the morning to see he won 6-5  I thought that going into the final frame he must have been a huge outsider considering the lead he had blown.  I also saw Mark Allen managed to go from 4-1 up (and with two big tons) to lose 4-6 against journeyman Lawler.

Bobby was it you that pre Tft pointed out that the person who gets back to even after being behind more often then not fails to cross the line?
One I have always tried to follow and another couple of quid in the pot because of it last night.

Yes it's a real mindset angle I think in that the guy that is losing lightens up and plays freely because he thinks he is going to lose anyway so the pressure is off. The guy in front nuts up because he doesn't need to go and chase half chances and tries to make the other guy do the hard work to beat him.

So when it gets to level again and there is a decider the guy that has come from behind mindset changes the most because now he is thinking 'I've got back into this I better not blow it now' and he then nuts up, the guy that was winning easily now isn't scared he is going to throw the lead away anymore because he doesn't have one and goes back to playing closer to his normal game. It has been a good angle over the years and I prefer it even more if the guy that comes from behind starts to shout/wave is arms/ yells at his friends in the crowd/punches the air when he wins the penultimate frame.

Yeah, I always got on well enough with Eddie, even when he got stiffed by the guy that used to back me back then, and he had a good laugh about it when I saw him in Vegas a few years later.

Definitely cut from the same cloth as his old man, and seem to do well at whatever they turn their hand to. Don't become attached to things, and just ditch them when they're no longer printing the green stuff. Guess that's what separates the shrewd, from the not so shrewd...

I had exactly the same experience with Barry in 2008, when they had some Vegas Darts tournament on during the WSOP. I was outside having a cigarette when the smoking area was right next to the Amazon. You could see him looking about to see if he knew anyone, and he obviously recognised me, after I'd spent an afternoon in the green room with him and Katie, who at the time was seeing Theo Dalton.

Bit of poker smalltalk, and then the 'You boys should go down and watch the Darts, great show!'

Obviously no mention of any freebies, though Cheesy
