If I'm about, and I can, I'll get on for Fred.
Hope things are on the up for your kids soon, Tighty.

I'm no expert on drainage but it takes a lot of rain to get York really soft, and they usually seem to go through it well up there.
I'd guess it comes down to what sort of soil the course is on, as well as what type of rain. Wet rain on clay would be tough. Meh rain on chalk not so bad.
York dries out quickly, same as Newmarket. I'm not sure I believe it's genuinely good to soft ground though.
The COTC would have known that if he'd said it was soft Golden Horn and Gleneagles would have been insta-withdrawn. There could be a glut of withdrawals after the first.
Listen will definitely be out walking the course in his grey mac.

Carlisle got a consolation goal to ease that long long journey home.
Final score 4-1, well done all.
Thank you Tighty.
It really was a clever spot by Tighty.
A good opportunity to mention that Tighty has some domestic issues at present, with 2 of his children quite unwell. One was in hospital last I heard. What with that, & preparation for UKPC, which involves a lot of intricate detailed stuff for Tighty, he is unable, at present, to give Fred the attention it needs.
Hence the "Lite" daily updates - the full-blown versions are much missed, & explains why Fred was not on the Plymouth coup. The latter does not really matter, of course, though we could have used it right now, but the main thing is the info was put up, & it seems plenty climbed aboard.
I suppose it might be easy to say looking through the rear view mirror, (Guilty, M'Lord) but it does show that in the thinner markets in League Two, there is still value to be had if you look close enough & do a bit of detective work.
I would imagine everyone will now be opening google Maps when looking at future weekday fixtures. Another little weapon in our arsenal.
Sorry to hear about your children Tighty, hope they are fully recovered soon.

Current day trainers don't know what "soft" is.
From York Racecourse Wiki.......
The Knavesmire course, as the name suggests, was often very swampy, and in 1776, heavy rains meant that horses had to race for about fifty yards up to their knees in water

There is a very good chance that Gleneagles doesn't go on the rain softened ground in the international (3.40 york). If it does go I suggest that makes several horses good bets. I particularly like Cougar Mountain at 80/1 at quarter first 3 and The Grey Gatsby at 11/1 if we can get the same an hour or so before the off. Suggest 10 e/w and 20 e/w if we can get on.
There are several other good each way races tomorrow though expect that 17 runner affair is a bit too vulnerable with the changing conditions. I am going to be a bit stuffed getting bets on tomorrow so can't help/update (flying back from Spain over lunch then driving) so going to struggle to update personally. Might be able to put something up for the last and update on the international.
Good luck
If Gleneagles runs, I'll eat Paddy Ashdown's hat.
Prepare the salt and pepper, Twitter chatter suggests he might run after all.
Which would be a perverse decision seeing as he was withdrawn on genuinely good ground over his preferred trip of a mile. Why risk him on soft over a trip 2f further than his ideal?
Each way bandits, on yer marks.....
The ground is given as good for the first 8 furlongs and good to soft the last two. My thinking is that good at York is a better surface than good at Goodwood. Calling Neil on this one, but Chompy did a good post the other day about similar issues. Of course it can't be certain and is still only 50/50 on the hp sauce.
How recent was the rain, & what sort of rain was it? It's important, you know.
It started at 5am yesterday and rained constantly until midnight.
I don't think it was ever heavy rain, but 19 hours of drizzle is still a great deal of water.
I would be very surprised if it isn't softer than Goodwood, on which they didn't risk Gleneagles.
Maybe they were more scared of Solow than Golden Horn!

I still think Cougar Mountain is a bet at 100/1 and don't think quarter first 2 is terrible with that shape!
Edit only 3 serious horses and something odd could happen. Don't think ours is a mug. Someone just say yes and thread has a 5 e/w at those terms.

You will be glad to know that it was backed into 50/1. A 50/1 won the race against the odds on favourite.

Right theory, completely the wrong horse. Ours was hopeless.

Marv.
Had it endured a long coach journey from its stable?
Wrong king of rain?
Wrong kind of soft going?
Still, at least we get the satisfaction of Camel eating a hat, so we got something worthwhile.
