Great thread this. Played a lot of chess as a kid at county level in lots of team things. Got back into it at Uni for a while, but then discovered I like beer and women more. Enjoyed watching the games and I reckon I follow most of what is going on so keep them coming!

Think I got the winning move on the board above, but don't want to ruin it for everyone else so I'll hang on for a bit!

May I ask which county and roughly when? Always good to have other people keen and involved.

Played for Lancashire and a lot in the Blackpool leagues from late 80s up to about '96. Played a bit at Uni in York from 96 to about 2000.

Excellent. Glad to have you with us. Anything you want to contribute, just put it up. Anything vaguely chess related is welcome (no rude lady pictures, though. We don't want the likes of Millidonk getting too off piste )

To be honest, not even thought about chess for years till I read some of the games and stuff on here. Surprised by how much I enjoyed them. Might have to dust down the old board and try and bully some of my mates into taking me on.

Although most of my mates are mouth-breathers and I'd beat them at chess at 20% capacity.

lol looking at problem of previous page & trying to workout solution , showed my kid & he came up with mate in 20 seconds , got to hate some people some times  , that is a nice problem

Welcome Hutch, we could use some hustling stories here.

In my first year of high school, the subject of chess came up during a science class and my conversation with the kid next to me begins with 'I'm quite good at chess...'.

Much like myself this kid Dave insisted he was the best chess player in his primary school. The conversation went round in circles 'I would beat you', 'no I would beat you'. He was warned by the kids behind him 'but Dave he is  really good' but based on our respective academic abilities he was not the slightest bit open to the idea that he could lose to me.

Naturally I challenged him to a game in the library and suggested we wager a weeks dinner money on it. Alas no matter how much I pestered him and slowly lowered the stakes, he wasn't going to bite. Turns out he wasn't a degenerate and was too fond of eating his lunch each day.

It's a bit of a shame we never played for money as I was a Scottish Under 13 international player at time.

It's a marvellous trick

Nothing like getting someone to challenge you to something you know they're going to lose in. I once played a lad at school without looking at the board, while he sat at it. I was playing a lot then and found visualising the board pretty easy, so it was not that difficult to play at a similar level to I would have sitting opposite him. He didn't know that, of course.

Met an old acquaintance of yours last week at the Cromwell Mint in South Ken, Julian Hodgson, also a former Chess player, now a Poker player/teacher..

He mentioned he got into poker through some other chess players that picked up the game, so I had to ask if he knew you
