Best advice is to contact the bank direct and not via any of these agencies that take a big slice of your money. Either way agencies can't help find where you borrowed from, this will be down to your own memory. Or failing that another way would be to contact someone like Experian and they can advise who has a done credit searches on you. Although it sounds a bit odd that you don't know who you have had a mortgage with?

I've just got a hefty lump back from a loan I took out in 2002 - I'm still paying it off thanks to getting into *financial difficulty in my early 20's. It was through Sainsbury's that was ultimately backed by RBS. Sainsbury's had a "PPI Helpline" number on the website that I just called and within 8 weeks I should have the cash in my account.

so many of these companies advertised on tv/internet always phone you up, it would be interesting how much the banks have paid out to folk claiming this back, must be a fortune..

Except the 25% you lost by not claiming direct from the lender.

It's basically a case of filling out a firm with the details and waiting...
Then waiting some more...
Then either getting an offer or taking it to FOS and doing some hardcore waiting.
Still just one form tho!
