If it helps, I mount sd card as a drive too, it comes up as an option when I plug the usb cable in. I can't see the folders unless I do it. Probably doesn't help but it's what I do to copy music across.
For the photos thing, I bet it's not much slower to just copy everything across into a new folder then delete the ones you don't want. Not an ideal solution to what you need of course but it's an easy work around and it'd be easier to see photos properly from the thumbnail on the laptop rather than the phone.
Found a work-around for the photo's. Open them in Picasa and I can view them there. then just import the ones I want. Found a work-around for the music files too but I'm not bright enough to explain what it was I did. Next problem- Documents attached to emails. When I download them I can view them once in the 'Downoads' folder. If I try to view them again after that, I get a message saying "This file has already been opened"

Just got the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 on EE, got the following deal
Unlimited Minutes " " Data " " Texts 2 Swappables 50 minutes to the U.S a month
£28.50 per month, I paid £30 up front for the phone and they were asking for £14 per month for insurance..
Brilliant phone, really happy with it..
(I should add, I've been with Orange/EE for 12 years and had some issues with being over charged with data recently)
Did you get the insurance? Can you connect the phone to your computer via a USB cable and then view the pictures that you've taken as thumbnails before you download them? Yes I opted for insurance only because I managed to sell my old Blackberry for £150 so I subsidized the years premium as £14 per month for phone insurance is astronomical. Yes you can connect the Phone via USB and view pictures as thumbnails. I usually use dropbox to save my photos and if uploading them to my Mac I use an application called "Kies" which allows me to synch my phone to my Mac or TV over bluetooth. The Samsung Galaxy S 3 is a great phone, you'll find the android software much more versatile then IOS which I've always found slightly rigid.

Does your bank account cover it? Or credit card?

Bank account doesn't. If the credit card does it hasn't said anything.

Also, what is it with these permissions when you download an app?
I tried to download a simple notepad and it wanted permission to access and control everything.
It also wanted to know what Mrs Red was wearing.

Okay it's £6.99 per month and covers against - Accidental damage - Liquid damage - Abroad cover - Theft - Up to £100 of unauthorized calls - Breakdown - 48 replacement or if repairable they will do it within 5 days It was £5.99 but I opted for £1 loss cover to, paid via paypal upfront for the year at £83.88 It seems like a good deal by a reputable company (AIZ are the parent company) On Permissions http://socialtimes.com/android-app-permissions-explained_b47761

Another thing.... The short cut on this phone takes me to something called Play Store rather than Android Market. Are they the same?

in the dozen or so years I've had a mobile phone I haven't had any of these problems with one. Are other people more careless or is insurance just a bit of a waste?

I suppose it depends on your environment. I've had several of the above problems but I spend a lot of time outdoors and I'm always climbing over / crawling under things. I'm also quite forgetful, and I get wet often and fall over a lot.
