RIP Joe Mercer.
Famously, the jockey for Brigadier Gerard, Bustino, Kris & so many more, especially those in the care of Major Hern, & later, after his sensational sacking, Henry Cecil.

His sacking was before my (racing) time, so had to look it up. There is a lot of background in this thread in the posts by Bustino74.

Good to see the Baffert horses beaten at the weekend. I suppose in some ways it is better that happened than having to listen his few remaining supporters spending the next few years moaning about how the horse was "robbed" of the triple crown. No harm in banning the horse now though...

That's a very good post by "Bustino".
There was an interview on Sky Sports Racing with Joe Mercer last night, a repeat, obv, but very enjoyable. It was quite clear that Joe Mercer & Willie Carson did not have much respect for each other.
I so remember the day Mercer's departure from West Ilsley was announced, it was huge news at the time. It worked out ok for him in the end though, he became Cecil's #1 & was Champion Jockey a few years later. He was then succeeded by Piggott, who had parted company with the Vincent O'Brien/Sangster crew. I was no judge of these things, but Piggott aside, I always thought Joe Mercer was the best jockey of his era, certainly better than Eddery, Hide, Carson & Co.
Baffert? I noticed he chose not to attend Saturday's Preakness. And as it happened, the result was probably what most of us wanted.

Easily the greatest interview both sides of the micro phone in the history of racing media. I think this interview made Luke Harvey as well in the media. RIP the greatest ever to land a proper proper touch numerous times. The telephone box story in Ireland in the dark ages is stuff of legend to stop the off course firms sending money back to the track. Impossible in the modern day but he was always miles ahead of any era.

That interview does make me laugh, and he was always good at the preview evenings, too.
RIP a gambling legend.

It is all Churchill Downs Incorporated tracks, which include churchill Downs and Arlington Park. I checked the original statement here.

There seems a good chance we end somewhere else after appeal, but I'll be pleased if they can hold the line here.
