The pokerineurope forum used to rival thehendonmob as the liveliest poker forum around.

Mark Strahan's pokerintheuk forum always lagged behind for some reason.

Pokerineurope.com and Poker Europa magazine.

For that matter, Nic Szermeta too.

Weird you mention Nic Szermeta, I spotted his name on the UKIPT @ DTD Chip counts yesterday. Not seen him for a good few years.

Wiki tells me he is over 70 now, good Lord.

Back in the day, PokerEuropa Magazine was a must read for most of us in poker. It was weird, a single magazine printed in 3 or 4 different languages. It had a "Results Section" at the back, too, which we all (or many of us) scoured avidly.

I used to write Tourney Reports for them, think I got £150 a whack, then someone - still in poker - pulled a bit of a stroke on me, by writing Tourney Reports for Poker Europa simply from reading blonde Live Updates, hr never even attended the Events, lol.

It became a quite busy Online Site & Forum later, but it sort of fell behind the times I think.

I seem to recall that Nic was in partnership with Jon Shoreman, who I believe still plays Mixed Cash Games at The Vic.

I had a few business dealings with Jon. Sharp cookie, I'd rather be on his side than against him.

He's still playing?

Wow, whoever said there's no value in poker tournaments any more was lying.

I used to read every magazine going every month: card player, poker player, WPT, bluff, flush (remember that?!) and poker europa. Loved them all.

Does Nic Szeremeta still write for the Independent? Think they used to have a rotation in their games section. Jon Speelman did the chess, someone else did Bridge and so on.

I walked into the Vic a couple of years agp and there was a promotion running in the casino.

For an hour each day both player and bank paid even money on Punto Banco.

If I remember my maths correctly betting on bank every hand returned a +1.5% ROI in expected value.

If they offered this promotion in a Vegas casino, they'd be swamped by every advantage player in Nevada queuing up to get on the table.

Here, it was just the regular players, not varying from their normal strategy.

Except one poker player, religiously betting £200 on bank every hand.

Jon Shoreman.

A sharp cookie indeed.

I noticed his name on the list of survivors too.

I've not seen him since I played a tourney in Torquay a few years ago at the subterranean casino there, shared a table with his daughter Kate who appeared in the original series of LNP too.

There were quite a few notables there including the ubiquitous Bambos, Des Wilson who is NickS's pal, M3Boy, Albert Sapiano, Camel's old mate Laurence Robjent, Paul Parker and Bruce "Elvis" Atkinson who I think won it.

I just had a look, he played UKIPT Day 1c, & survived the day.

I do recall he was quite handy at 7 card Stud & the like, pretty sure he won the only Stud Tourney ever run @ DTD - in fact, I am pretty sure he sponsored it.

Blimey Ralph, a thousand memories & stories come to mind from that one sentence.

Laurence Robjent, wow! "Paper Boy". Never sat at a poker table without his Sporting Life or Racing Post. Think he got mugged in Barca one year. I've shared a Final Table or two with him.

My prediction of his exit from this tournament..

He'll survive to within 80 of the money.

He'll have 6 big blinds left when he gets it all in with AQ suited against a 22 year old hoodie wearing internet genius with 120 bbs who holds K9 offsuit.

9 on the turn, exit Nic muttering about how unlucky he was.

Kate Szeremeta.

Woof!

She attempted to sue Vicky Coren for libel.

Vicky wrote in her book that Kate had a tattoo of Stephen Fry and this was incorrect.

It was Ben Elton.

Kate threatened legal action.

Vicky's publishers made the change for the softback version. IIRC

Good Lord.

As an exercise in reading between the lines, Vicky's fulsome "apology" had me in bits.

There must, presumably, have been some history.

Could you imagine getting intimate with a young lady for the first time, and just as the moment is peaking to a crescendo..

You notice she has a tattoo of Ben Elton on her hip.

I would think that might dampen your ardour somewhat

That's in the same category of daftness as Posh Spice wanting to sue Peterborough United for nicking her "Posh" as their nickname.

She(Kate) was even worse than her dad at poker from what I saw, nice smile tho'.
