Ignorance certainly isn't a good enough reason for a soft sentence. I think everyone is made well aware that this is something that is very very dangerous and risky and also extremely illegal. There are programs such as 'locked up abroad' and when you're at school there are often topics about this sort of thing.

They knew the risks, they were incredibly stupid and in this world if you do something very illegal and very stupid and get caught then you deserve everything you get.

I think the sentence is reasonable.

Irrespective of the moralities they did get off light given the sentences available to the judge.

the reporting of this in the uk press was generally very "nice"

any reason why that was?

They were in Ibiza, and were probably casual drug users maybe even dealt a bit, I highly doubt that a gangster is going to put a gun to their head and demand that they fly to Peru and pick up a load of drugs. It's a cop out, the same 'story' you always hear and they hoped it would shave off a few years, cwhich it appears to have done IMO, wp lawyers! I don't have any sympathy tbh.

I'd love to know how much gets through & by what method. Putting it in suitcases seems a bit crazy with all the technology & sniffer dogs.

It's such a huge market all over the world, I would have thought the criminals would have developed a more sophisticated way of trafficking, then using drug mules.. Maybe it's just a low level thing..

Watched a movie called Traffic years ago, where the Traffickers were making dolls out of Cocaine and had a method of procuring the cocaine back into a usable form (Not sure if this was just "Minority Report" stuff for the movie) they were then exporting the dolls from Mexico to the U.S in large quantities..
Seems like a better way of getting drugs across borders..

Read a case in the UK years ago where a trafficker was bringing in Cocaine in Lead ingots, it was almost impossible to detect, the criminals name is Curtis Warren, he was one of the richest men in the UK all from drugs, Google the case, it makes an interesting read...

there are ways to liquidise it and then convert it back to pure powder form at the other end which allows for interesting ways of hiding it.

ldo mules work because there is zero risk other than the outlay for the product for the organiser, and if you send enough people a bunch are bound to get through.

this whole prohibition and not understanding it thing is proving itself to be a really effective way to combat drug use....

When I was living in London, one of the guys in the pub was on about it being brought over in wine bottles, and then cooked back into solid form.

I think they just adopt a 'throw enough shit at a wall and some will stick' mentality to exporting it.

Given how rare it is we hear about massive pick ups by customs, I imagine they get a fair bit through. I remember reading some figures in a book, but can't recall exactly what they were.

Alcohol Prohibition was a monumental failure... Created more harm then it ever did good, gave organized a steroid boost...

There has to be policies that may calm the effects and control drug usage, we spend so much on anti drug policies, still drugs are easy to come by....

There's very little evidence to say that prohibition has been successful, there has to be a better way...
