as i said on tft when i saw it, 3 games in 6 days over xmas gave southampton the toughest schedule of any team over Xmas

rotation was inevitable, tiredness even more inevitable

got the rough end of the stick.

The players weren't that tired they were just terrible
They were running West Brom off  the pitch for the last 30 minutes

Jose Fonte hands in a transfer request. :-(

He is the last remnant of the league one team and has really been the heart of the side for 7 years.

Need a good replacement before he goes anywhere as Yoshida is not an adequate stop gap.

This says a lot about our wage structure. Fonte obviously believes he can get that one big deal elsewhere. Probably makes good business sense but tugs at the heart strings.

I assume we have some options in the pipeline given he was making these rumblings in the Summer.

i think he was more moved to hand in the request after not being allowed to lead "HIS" team in europe

£8-9 million though for a 33 year old. Talk from behind the scenes is that he wanted out immediately after winning the Euros and was not being very professional so not much to be done really. We offered him 70K a week so assume West Ham have topped that considerably. He has had a noticeable dip in form occasionally this season (gave away 3 penalties so far I think), a mixture of age catching up and underlying attitude I expect.

Could do with beating Leicester on Sunday then just holding tight until the Summer. We look destined for mid table so seems little point panic buying to try and reach 8th at best. I can't see how we keep Van Dijk this Summer so scouts need to get busy.

Fonte an absolute legend. We have West Ham at home at the start of Feb, he should get a good reception really but I doubt it.

yeah think it was very good deal for saints just leaving us threadbare at the back with the chance of getting a cup final place midweek

i dont see VVD leaving seemingly he is building his own house on the south coast and loves it down there, also if he was thinking of moving on he wouldnt have wound up the fans wearing the secret santa city shirt

i do think he will move on in 2 or 3 seasons but to a big Spanish team

WEMBLEY here comes the Saints

Nearly hit the ceiling when Long knocked that in. Much the better team over two legs, thoroughly deserved.

Puel nailed tactics in both games. Brilliant.

7 years since last Wembley trip with Saints for JPT. Can't wait to go again.

i know there is a big disconnect between (some) fans and clubs as to the FA Cup

and it was Southampton's ninth game in january yesterday

but (play another record) wasn't the team selection yesterday a complete shocker?

Decisions like Puel's to make 10 changes do the Fa Cup no favours.  Not going down, unlikely to make top 7...so go for it in the cup!!!!

From a personal point of view, I couldn't care less about the FA cup. I had a season ticket for 7 years from age of 21-28 and I think went to one FA cup game. I am from the era that doesn't buy into the "magic of the cup". If we make a run then great but I am unlikely to invest unless we made the last 4.

The only way to really bring through young players is to give them real games. The nature of the premier league makes that harder and harder so I am all for giving them opportunities in the league cup and FA cup where the pressure is off.

Admittedly selling out the ground and getting hammered 0-5 doesn't look great but I wouldn't have changed anything either.

Not a Jake Humphrey fan at all. From the school of "banter" rather than knowledge. Pushing the same old narrative as it suits the BT coverage but the reality is many teams moved away from taking the FA cup seriously years ago.
