thought this was interesting.

the SNP declines to increase top rate to 50p.

Scottish government paper explains why increasing tax on the rich is pointless as they'll only avoid paying it. (which is basically the thatcher/reagan policy from the 80s)

Q of the day

Has the Brussels attacks shifted your perspective to any degree on the BREXIT vote?

My gut instinct was surprising to me, it actually solidified my desire to stay in Europe, as a show of solidarity I guess. It helps that I have an affection for Brussels.

I'm sure as more details emerge about the attacks I'll probably move back the other way a little, and if we have another attack before the vote even more.

FYI my position is and always been I want to stay in Europe, however I am open to arguments about leaving.

Slightly, I believe it's a red mark against the claims that we are safer together.

We probably are safer if information is shared properly and in a timely manner, but that appears not to be the case.

I will still vote to remain for many other reasons though.  But I can see why this would be a game changer for Brexit.  Any further attacks will only intensify calls for coming out.

If we didn't have water between us and the rest of Europe, I imagine I'd have a different view though obviously.

Got to love the 3% of UKIP supporters who will vote to stay in the EU.

It can't be good for remain that the top 6 groups, just don't vote in elections,

young people - famously no
Labour - predicted to win the election but the voters did not turn up and they lost
SNP - yes but only 6% of the electorate
LDs - 8 seats, not exactly a success
Greens - 1 seat
Guardian - not been happy with any govt, ever I think.

Not sure if serious.

Surely Guardian readers would be more likely than average to vote?  As are the more intelligent member of the population.  And the referendum certainly got a big part of the electorate out in Scotland.  And whilst Labour didn't get the vote out last time, they certainly did between 1997 and 2010.

I'd say you have a point on younger voters, but it is going to be balanced by the fact that the lower social classes are less likely to vote.  To me it feels that these two things would cancel out.

This is a decent read for political junkies.  I seen the link on twitter, I understand the author isn't very popular, I do wish though I was following his advice I'd have printed money on the Conservatives winning the election, I'm sure there were some big prices available at the bookmakers?

Much of this is personal back slapping, but it's good to look back on.
