Thanks, I appreciate the response. Interesting stuff, the FTSE underperforming in a period when the pound is weak is certainly a concern.

ROGER STONE IS COMING!

The most notorious dirty-tricks fixer in US politics history will be speaking next week in London, and you can be there.

Stone first became known during the Watergate hearings, when his activities for the Nixon campaign were uncovered, including making a contribution to Nixon's Republican Primary challenger in the name of the Young Socialist Alliance, and then sending the receipt to a newspaper to paint the candidate as a left-wing stooge. In the Presidential election, he hired an under-cover spy to infiltrate the campaign of Nixon's Democrat opponent, George McGovern, which was so successful that he became McGovern's driver.

Since then, he has done his stuff for Reagan, Bush Snr, Bob Dole and numerous others, but especially Trump, who he has lobbied for since the 1980s. He was Trump's campaign manager when Trump first tried for President in 2000, but it didn't go far. He was heavily involved in the early part of Trump's successful campaign, but departed part-way through.

His consulting firm worked for many terrible regimes around the world, including Ferdinand Marcos, Mobuto Sese Seko of Zaire and Angola’s UNITA rebels. One of the other partners was Paul Manafort.

He was recruited to prevent recounts in Miami of the 2000 Bush-Gore election, bringing thousands of protestors to the count centres and succeeding in stopping the recounts.

He put it about that Michelle Obama called white people 'Whiteys' and that Bill Clinton is not Chelsea's father and she had four plastic surgeries to make her look less like her real father. He also set up an anti-Hillary Clinton PAC called Citizens United Not Timid.

Stone has not mellowed with age. His motto is 'Admit nothing, deny everything, launch counterattack', adopted by Trump with huge success. He was recently suspended from Twitter for 'derogatory and threatening' tweets aimed at CNN personalities. He is also banned from CNN, MSNBC and Fox because of his outspoken statements. We may not approve of his methods, but this is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to hear one of the nastiest pieces of work at the top of US politics in person. He is not merely unapologetic, he fully believes in what he does and has done and is prepared to say so. He still loves and defends Nixon, to the extent of having a Nixon tattoo on his back.

Dutch agencies provide crucial intel about Russia's interference in US-elections

Hackers from the Dutch intelligence service AIVD have provided the FBI with crucial information about Russian interference with the American elections. For years, AIVD had access to the infamous Russian hacker group Cozy Bear. That's what de Volkskrant and Nieuwsuur have uncovered in their investigation.

NYT
The president of the United States has tried repeatedly to shut down an investigation into whether his campaign coordinated with Russian officials to help him win the 2016 election. Let’s review.

It's the State of the Union Address on Tuesday.

We are told that the President will adopt a conciliatory tone, calling for bi-partisanship, and will focus on five topics:
- Jobs/the economy
- Infrastructure
- Trade
- Immigration
- National security

The most interesting part may be the Democratic Party’s rebuttal, which is being delivered by Representative Joe Kennedy, grandson of Bobby. The rebuttal speech can (should) be the launchpad to national stardom, but an underwhelming performance has undermined a promising career more than once.

If the speech goes well, we can add another name to the list of 2020 Democrat possibles.

I saw Kennedy speak a short while back, and he was very impressive.

Trump's big speech coming up. Stephen Miller has written it, which is not a good start - he did the Convention and Inauguration speeches (with Bannon). Various Cabinet Secretaries chipped in with stuff on their areas and Trump made other changes, but it is essentially Miller's work. There will be plenty about 'America First' and security, immigration etc and they will claim full credit for the economy they inherited. The only questions are how conciliatory Trump will be, whether he will mention the Mueller investigation and whether he will go off-script.

Joe Kennedy has the problem of shooting it down while offering bi-partisan co-operation. This role is often described as cursed - Bobby Jindal's career still hasn't recovered from a dodgy performance, though Mario Rubio's has. On the other hand, the likes of Paul Ryan, Nikki Haley and Tim Kaine used the opportunity as a stepping stone to national prominence; while Gerald Ford, George Bush Snr and Bill Clinton went on to give their own SotU Addresses.

There will be some unusual guests attending - some Democrats have invited undocumented immigrants, some have invited #MeToo representatives and Kennedy has invited a transsexual soldier. Trump's guests include families who have had members killed by illegal immigrants.

About a dozen members of Congress and one Supreme Court Justice are boycotting it but you can see it live on YouTube.  Trevor Noah and others are doing live shows straight after, but the most interesting might be Jimmy Kimmel, who will be interviewing Stormy Daniels.

Will this lead to JPKIII becoming a major national figure? As Marky says, he is an impressive speaker and there are several memorable speeches on YouTube. He could hardly look more like a Kennedy, but he doesn't speak like one, with a speaking style that reminds me more of Obama. Having declined the chance to run for Governor of Massachusetts later this year, his next step should be the Senate in 2020, but Trump has shown that the normal career-build is not essential.

The state of the USA is one thing, but cash is king, so Trump supporters have received the text below today (verified by Snopes as genuine).

This is the link https://secure.donaldjtrump.com/sotu-2018/, which takes you to a donation page on Trump's re-election site.

You still have time to make a contribution and have your name displayed during the speech.

Ooh, that could be fun.  How hard is it to put Donald Isaac Hunt in as the donator?
