You can normally tell when it's Donald tweeting, but hard to tell with most of them.

Very sad he died, but no doubt that will be someone else's fault, too.

I think he said it was the "China-virus" that killed him.

PS On the subject of PC - is it still permissable to refer to a Chinese-snooker?

Biden owes so much to Jim Clyburn, who delivered South Carolina and turned the race on the weekend before Super Tuesday. Clyburn is the most powerful Black member of Congress, and if he was to insist on a Black VP, it would be hard for Joe to go against him, especially given how Clyburn transformed the race in his favour. But Clyburn hasn’t done so. He said some time ago that a Black woman would be a plus, rather than a must, and he repeated it today. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/clyburn-says-more-important-to-have-black-woman-on-supreme-court-than-as-vp. He talks about it from 8:00 to 10:00, saying that getting a Black woman onto the Supreme Court is more important than having one as VP. He wrote in a Financial Times article that he favours Lance Bottoms, but this gives Biden permission to choose a non-Black VP. Doesn’t mean he will, of course, but it allows him all his options. Essentially, it keeps Warren’s hopes alive, and those of Michelle Lujan Grisham (New Mexico Gov), who I thought was out of it, but seems to still be getting mentions.

Karen Bass' name is coming up a lot now. From the back of the field, she is a real possibility, as the 'do-no-harm' view is gaining ground. Kamala is still the most starry option, but some Biden supporters and several donors have been arguing against her. And Susan Rice is still a definite possibility. It seems to be between these three.

For some reason, Kyrsten Sinema is getting mentions in the media as a possible VP. She won Jeff Flake's Senate seat in Arizona last time, flipping it for the Dems. Arizona is in the balance this time, so it could make all the difference, and she's the first Democrat to win a Senate seat in Arizona for 30 years. She is a young Biden-supporting moderate, quite at odds with the Progressives and quite a colourful character, being the first openly bisexual member of Congress, the only non-religious member and the only member to complete an Ironman (15 hours). She is actually very conservative on most issues and has been the second-most rebellious Senator, voting against the Democrat line in 27% of votes. The idea is ridiculous, no doubt put about to increase her profile.

Elizabeth Warren would be a huge loss to the Senate. Her specialism is banking and the financial services industry and her personal beef is bankers who take advantage and screw ordinary people over, and she lets them have both barrels when she gets hold of them. The same applies to regulators who aren't doing their job.

Here she is taking apart John Stumpf, the Chairman & CEO of Wells Fargo, at the Senate Banking Committee. "You should resign, you should give back the money.....and you should be criminally investigated." He resigned three weeks later.

This was Stumpf's replacement, Tim Sloan. "At best, you are incompetent. At worst, you are complicit. Either way, you should be fired......You made money personally off it, when you were asked about it you did not tell the truth and you tried to cover it up. Wells Fargo is not going to change with you in charge." He went too.

Wells Fargo is still going on. She is after it again for its dodgy activities during the Covid crisis, and wrote to the new CEO this week demanding information, saying the bank "appears to be incapable of self-governance".

Before she was elected to Congress, Warren proposed that there should be a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Obama agreed and got her to set it up. Now the Director of the CFPB has to come before the Banking Committee and be questioned on what they're up to by the person who set it up, who is at least as expert on it as they are, which must not be very pleasant, especially for the Republicans who are now in charge, who don't share her view of the purpose and objectives of the Bureau.

This was Leonard Chanin, formerly of the Fed, who was an Assistant Director at the CFPB. "You played a key role in blowing up the economy.....Of all the people who might be called on to advise Congress about how to weigh the costs and benefits of consumer regulations, I am surprised that my Republican colleagues would choose someone who might have one of the worst track records in history on this issue."

Obama's CFPB Director didn't get on with the new regime and buggered off to run unsuccessfully for Governor of Ohio. Trump's Chief of Staff and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney added the CFPB to his other responsibilities for just over a year, and then Kathleen Kraninger took over as Director. When she came up before the Committee, Warren let her have it. "If you had any decency you'd either do your job or resign."

Kraninger was back this week. "Your leadership has been a miserable failure. Based on your actions in this pandemic, you should resign."

There are several more videos on YouTube, including some early ones where she challenged regulators for not prosecuting banks, particularly HSBC for knowingly laundering over $800m for drug cartels. If she becomes VP, she'll have enormous influence, but someone else will have to kick butt at this level.

She really is good when ripping into those scumbags.

Really interesting guest on Rogan was Matt Taibbi, who wrote a book on that crash, and how ridiculous it was they all got away with it.

Yeah, the first two in particular are absolute assaults on the Wells Fargo CEOs.
“On those calls, you blah blah blah, didn’t you?”
“No, I didn’t.”
“No, you didn’t?”
“No.”
“Well, here are the transcripts of all the investor earnings calls that you participated in from 2011 to 2014.”
Eyes boggle behind her.

I must check out what Taibbi said. I see he does a podcast with Katie Halper, who broke the Tara Reade story.

If he picks Duckworth and wins; then dies or resigns during his term, who would take over?

The next in line is Speaker of the House of Representatives, so Nancy Pelosi.

This article argues that choosing Susan Rice would be a gift for Trump, as he and others would use Benghazi to demonise her, so it wouldn’t be worth the risk when there are options who don’t have that baggage. Similarly, getting her approved by the Senate for Secretary of State would run into the same tactics. If Biden really wants her on hand, it would be easier to make her Chief of Staff, which doesn’t require anyone’s approval. Makes a lot of sense, in my view.

https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/biden-vp-susan-rice-vice-president-2020-election-a9646676.html

Kamala is really disliked by a lot of people. The comments section of everything I read or watch is filled with people saying they’re happy with any of the options except her. Some of it is due to things she’s done but most just don’t like her. They think she is too slick and they don’t trust her. If this doesn’t come off, her image is going to need an overhaul to be competitive in any future elections.

Warren may be the best option. She is certainly qualified, which will be even more important if it becomes necessary to take over as President. Michelle Lujan Grisham would also be well qualified as VP or President, though I suspect she hasn’t made the shortlist.

Brilliant running commentary as always Mint.  Surely the best source of American political insight outside of the US.  Dung.
