Brilliant running commentary as always Mint.  Surely the best source of American political insight outside of the US.  Dung.

They'd probably poach him if they could Smiley

From the Primaries:

Another Progressive has seen off a long-term Democrat. In Missouri, Lacy Clay has been ousted from the House seat, which includes St Louis and Ferguson, that he and his father have held for the last 52 years, ever since Nixon was first elected President in 1968. Lacy has spent 38 years in office, the last 20 in the US House and 18 years before that between the Missouri House and Senate. And now, he has been kicked out by Cori Bush, a Black activist nurse from the Progressive side of the party, who first came to politics as an organiser of the Ferguson protests, and was one of the subjects of the Knock Down The House movie. What is going to scare the hell out of old-school Dems is that this is Missouri, for God's sake, not Chicago or NYC. Also, most of the recent Progressive intake have got their seats by shaking down distinguished old White guys, but Clay is a distinguished old Black guy. This is a safe Democrat seat, and Cori is a shoo-in when she faces a token Republican in November, so we'll be hearing more of her in the future. Another Democrat Progressive, Squad member Rashida Tlaib, won her Primary in Michigan, beating the opponent who she had a 1% margin against last time by 2:1 this time.

There was a fascinating situation in Kansas, with the Republican hierarchy worried about losing a Senate seat the party has held for over 100 years. This should be an easy hold for them, but Kris Kobach (former Chairman of Kansas Republicans and Kansas Secretary of State for eight years until last year) was in a strong position to be the candidate. Kobach is known nationally for some of the toughest anti-immigration and voter-exclusion enforcement, and has tried to exclude 20,000 Kansas voters in various ways. He also drafted the nation's most hard-line anti-immigration laws for Arizona and Alabama, led Trump's Voter Fraud Commission and has repeatedly been invited to advise the President. He is the originator of the citizenship question on the 2020 national census. Trump encouraged him to run for the Senate, but the GOP Senate leadership foresaw that such a controversial candidate could put the safe seat at risk. Mitch McConnell put his leverage to work to make sure Kobach didn't win, and Trump stayed out of it. McConnell's candidate came through, so the crisis is averted and the GOP should safely bank the seat in November.

Remember this guy from the last time? He was one of the few to predict that Trump would win. What does he say this time?

You've probably seen this, but let's drop it in anyway. Be sure to visit Yo Semite National Park.

It's clear that he doesn't even read the speeches they give him before he delivers them, though I'm not sure how any American wouldn't know how it's pronounced.

I saw them talking about Cori Bush, and then Kobach yesterday, on The Hills.

Presume Kobach will get something down the line for that?

It's being widely reported that Gretchen Whitmer went to Delaware last weekend to discuss the job with Joe.

https://apnews.com/65025dc16aa18353cf868658d9b2314a

Her name came to the top briefly in early Summer, but she hasn't been mentioned much for a while. It would seem that she is still an active possibility, though it doesn't necessarily mean any more than that. It's known that Biden has met several candidates recently but we don't have the definite names of the others, because their people haven't talked.

Michigan is a battleground State, though Biden has an average 7-8% lead this time, down from 10% not long ago. Whitmer is very popular in Michigan, and having a Mid-Westerner on the ticket could also help in the other Swing States in that region. But she's White? That could be the trump card. Gretchen's Lieutenant Governor is Garlin Gilchrist and, if she becomes VP, he will become the only Black Governor in the country.

Who do you think Joe's team will advise him to pick, Mint?

So many protests, but is Whitmer's state where they all rocked up to protest about lockdown with their guns?

Dunno.
I sometimes wonder if it's already decided and they are just dragging it out to keep everyone talking about it, building that story while eating time when journalists might be focusing on Joe. But why did they put it back a week? Are they wrestling with choosing between fantastic candidates? Or have they uncovered a problem with the chosen one late on, and are weighing up whether it's worth sticking with them or making a change? And there's the bonus that it also means another week where Joe has a reason to have a light public schedule, so fewer foot-in-mouth opportunities.

I'm not sure where he goes from here. He has now run for both Governor and Senator and lost both, not even winning the party nomination this time. The party hierarchy is alienated from him. A job with Trump is a possibility, but it would have to be one that doesn't require Senate confirmation, and it would probably only last til January. Maybe he'll become a consultant or go on Fox News.

He was in the frame for a couple of big jobs with Trump previously, but it didn't go well. The photo with Trump was when he was up for Secretary of Homeland Security (when Kirstjen Nielsen was fired in early 2019). The document in his hand is his Strategic Plan for the DHS and is said to have included 'extreme vetting' of immigrants and a register of Muslims. Trump didn't make a permanent appointment, but appointed someone else as an interim.

The position of Immigration Czar came up shortly afterwards and Kobach got to the final two, but he submitted a list of conditions for taking the job. His demands were preposterous, shocking the White House team who usually shock everyone else, and that was the end of his chances.

Here's the guy the Republicans are painting as senile - out cycling today and looking damn healthy. Can you imagine Trump on a bike?

His team cleaned up that this was a joke and the running mate hasn't been picked yet.
