Many years ago 35-40 years in fact whilst getting stuck in various traffic jams down the A1 Sandy Stevenage around Watford A405 -A41 -A412 parts of which are now the m25
I heard that one day we will all be connected and lots can work from home to avoid the long hours travelling / polluting our way to an office
Now we can work from home with COVID
They want us back on the commuter trail
FFS. Make your minds up
The roads are much better flowing in lockdown
Please let’s not go back to the pre COVID jams
At least let people have a better work / travel balance

a selection of observations gleaned overnight

@AdamBienkov

The public are to blame for failing to social distance, says Boris Johnson, whose government has just spent millions subsidising meals out, told people it was their patriotic duty to go to the pub and warned homeworkers they’ll be sacked if they don’t go back to the office.

--

@lionelbarber

Boris Johnson: “Our country is a freedom loving country” - more nostalgic nationalist escapism from the hard truth that the UK’s track and trace does not work and the public has no confidence that people of privilege will follow the rules

--

@PippaCrerar

Just watched Boris Johnson's TV address to nation. Two thoughts:

1/ “Never in our history has our collective destiny and our collective health depended so completely on our individual behaviour" - he's right, but many people feel they've played their part but Govt hasn't.

2/ PM is 100% right that "locking up" the elderly & vulnerable with all suffering that would entail is also "unrealistic".

"If you let the virus rip through the rest of the population it would inevitably find its way through to the elderly as well, and in much greater numbers."

Feels like a lot of blame on ‘breaches’ by a population that cooperated with lockdown and accepted restrictions while the government failed on care homes, PPE, schools and testing.

Have listened to lots of despairing business owners on bbc5live today. It's just heartbreaking. If, like me, you're a salaried employee working in an industry that isn't made unviable by lockdown, you don't know you're born....

Key line from Boris Johnson: “Never in our history has our collective destiny and our collective health depended so completely on our individual behaviour.”

 PM’s whole statement was a call for us to all look out for each other. We all have a part to play.
With a nod to libertarian instincts

I fear though that too much political capital had been wasted in 2020 to ensure enough compliance

That last line is so key now.

Everyone on the whole went along with all of the rules the first time round, but the message has been such a mess, and now 6 months in I just cant see as many people following these new rules.

Sage member Prof John Edmunds: “We have to put stringent measures in... as fast as possible. We will at some point, but by then it will be too late again. We didn’t act quick enough in March. We haven’t learned from our mistake back then. Unfortunately we’re about to repeat it.”

Has anybody gone for the over 50s flu jab this year who doesn't normally get one?

I have got a text from my doctor today.  I know that Flu has been pretty much suppressed in much of the Southern Hemisphere this season due to all the anti Covid measures and that doctors surgeries aren't the safest places right now, but catching Flu and Covid together is going to be pretty grim and we do seem to have a fair proportion of the population who are Covid sceptics so we might not get the same supression of flu here.  I'd alos rather not take the place of someone who needs it more than me, but like most over 50s have pre-existing..

So what do you do?
