Gary Neville says Liverpool haven’t spent enough money to compete at the top this season  http://bit.ly/12xM1GZ

of course, he has no axe to grind

"“They obviously sold Luis Suarez for £65m and spent (around) £100m on five or six players, so they spent £40m. That’s not even touching the sides of what the big European teams do, and are spending when they’re really going for it.

“When you’re talking about a big club and Liverpool winning European Cups over the last 30 years, building a new 65,000-seater stadium; £40m net is not ‘going for it'.”

Agree with what he's said.  FSG haven't yet 'dug into their pockets' substantially yet to help Liverpool try and close the gap that has opened up between the club and others in the league.  They've relied on selling to prop up their spend. However, they seem to be in it for the long term, and might now be realising how much they need to spend to land the top-level players.

I was listening to Christian Purslow talking about united's spending this summer, and saying that in terms of the percentage of their global revenue the money they have spent hardly makes a dent, and the wages are easily accommodated as well.  Their spending power (same with Chelsea and City) are way ahead of Liverpool's currently.

Neville, G has been widely praised for his balanced views since he took up the role with Sky. I think the only criticism that can be levelled at him on this topic is that he's stating the bleedin' obvious.

And both out creative midfielders (courtinho and Lallana) both started on the bench, with Lallana not even making it on the pitch when we needed 2 goals in 20mins.

- taking off our only forward was also bizarre!

The worse we play the worse Rodgers seems to be tactically, the stronger the case gets that his input last year wasn't as big as i personally thought.

He was at pains sometimes to stress how he and he alone changed tactics during games and spotted things quickly, that he got the players playing a certain way, and coaching them etc etc.

Now he cant seem to even find his best 11, let alone do anything more.

£117m of his signings on the bench last night, in a game we needed to win! Wtf

Couldn't agree with all of this more. How can Bodgers not always start Lallana, and never keep him on until the end, it's a joke!!? Countihno is (at worst) a great impact sub, SO USE HIM WHEN WE NEED TO SCORE! At least he's finally removed Borini from the equation - a terrible purchase.

@thisisanfield: Midfielder Adam Lallana has been suffering with 2 broken ribs, it has been revealed.

A year ago we would have won this game 5-3.

Got to spend big in January on top striker and top keeper.

At least we created chances today ,De Gea was awesome .

Do you think that Rodgers will be entrusted with the funds to "spend big" though?
