I think Balague hits the nail on the head with Rafa. His management style is so "tough love" even after you've had a great game that only he very strongest mental players can play under him for a sustained period of time. Players like Gerrard and Carragher have said in their books they've never had a "well done" from Rafa but players of that ilk don't need an arm around their shoulder most weeks.

Doesn't that actually make him quite a poor man-manager? Surely a great manager can treat the players like individuals and determine who does need a pat on the back and all that?

3rd best left-back in the league imo.

Indeed. Something seems to work for him though. His trophy record is way above some better man managers for his relatively young age.

Is he good, I know nothing about him?  I guess he must be if you wanted us to sign him.

Have we ever had a Belgian at Liverpool?

From what I've saw of Liege I preferred him to Fellaini as a player - he was their Captain at a ridiculously young age a la Torres. (Not sure that will be the case now as I really like Fellaini in England but back then he was the man) He's very much in the Alonso mould. Maybe not quite as rangey, but definitely more capable of a defence splitter. More capable on the front foot too although probably not as robust. The one word I would use to describe him is vision. Downsides? Been injured a bit the last 2/3 years. He's 5"8. He's not lightning quick.

When he suffered a long term injury Fergie wrote him a hand written letter apparently telling him that he's a good player and he'll recover and go on to play for a great side. Although the letter went through Liege it was as close to tapping up as you get.

We need someone like him imo, maybe Banega, De Maria etc.

Lol apprently De Maria has gone to Real for 25 million Euro. Very under the radar. (Good news for us & Gerrard)

I don't know how they'll accomodate Gago, Diarra, Alonso, Van Der Vaart, Granero, the other Diarra and De Maria. If I were Roy Hodgson I'd be cheeky enough to bid for Diarra and see if the stupidest club on Earth have learned anything since not offering Makelele more than £40,000 p/w and telling him he could leave.

Just been reading up on Defour.  So Fergie tried to tap him up, Everton had a big rejected for him, and Real were interested in him before getting Alonso - and we were also sniffing around him when Alonso was sold like you said.

He can't be all that bad.  Lack of pace and robustness sounds like an issue though, but if we can keep Mascherano that would help.

Only a grade one tear for Torres, still, I'd be tempted to give him a month off without kicking a ball, needs more rest.
