No Flanagan or Robinson in the squad?

Have to be realistic that on matchdays they shouldnt be making the bench but of yes they would make the outreaches of the squad. Maybe a loan or more time with the reserves.

Agree that Robinson is a fringe squad player for now, but I'd have Flanagan in the side.

Flanagan definitely looks like he could do with a loan to the championship next season.
Get some more first team games under his belt hopefully in his preferred position, some weeks wingers will challange him, others he will be able to push forward without much pressure.

You need a LB, CB, CM, and a winger.

LB is priority - Konch will go so you need somebody in. Even if Insua returns I think you need to sign somebody and release Aurelio.
CB - Agger isn't fit for a full season, Carragher ageing and Skrtel with question marks. I'd go all out and go for Cahill but Rojo over Dann if you're looking at Birmingham. He's a bit more agile while I think is needed in a pressing team.
CM - I think Kenny will want the option of playing 2 holidng. Spearing has shown that he can deputise but I'd still be looking to strengthen this position and replace Poulsen's with Spearing in the squad player role.
Winger - Pace is definitely lacking in the team. Shipping out Cole will give you a lot of wages to spare. Don't think it will get you much cash though.

I'd be looking at squad of -
Reina
Sub keeper - Friedel for Jones sounds good. Jones is awful but i'd want to know I have a keeper a couple of years away.

Johnson
Kelly
Carragher
Skrtel
Agger
Cahill
LB

Robinson + Flanagan drifting in and out of squad when needed/when not on loan

Lucas
Spearing
CM

Gerrard
Meireles
Maxi
Kuyt
Mavereaux
Winger - be good if this player could play further up the pitch if needed too (a la Young)

Suarez
Carroll

Don't think you have a chance of Hazard. I think he'd cost more than you've estimated. England isn't his preference. Can't see him moving to you over other CL teams that would be in for him.
I'd also be putting N'Gog on the list of sales but possibly a loan may help him.

Unfortunately, I think you're right about Hazard.  Would like us both to be proved wrong though Cheesy

Ngog isn't one I'll ever get excited about.  Definitely nothing more than a squad player, and just can't see him improving dramatically enough to get anywhere near the first XI on a regular basis.

Mata or N'Zogbia

We desperately need pace on the flanks and the new left winger must be left footed. Our left wingers always seem to be right footed and cut in, we need someone who's gonna get to the bye line

Agree with most of stuff 77dave has said

Carroll would be a very expensive bench-warmer.

The villa stats are misleading because Downing was supplying the bullets for Emile Heskey, John Carew, and Gabby Agbonlahor. Think they got about 6 goals between them. If he does stay at Villa I'm sure his assist stats will rocket with Bent as frontman. For me, after paying £35m for an aerial threat I would seek to bring out the best in that new talent by employing at least one traditional winger to supply the ammo. So actually the important stats here are number and accuracy of crosses into the box, and Downing>>>>>>>Kuyt in that dept. Also Downing is a young english lad from the north-east who understands the premier league and will know what Carroll wants. I think the two of them would gel well and is why i'd sign him. When you get players gelling well you have a good team yah. Liverpool could pay 10m more for a fancy continental player unproven in the league but he wont know what Carroll's caveman screams from the box mean. Adam Johnson would be the best player in that position imo but Downing's a lot better than Pennant.

I like the logic but your last line is a killer. When we bought Pennant he was statistically superior to Downing on every front, made more crosses than anyone in the league that year for Brum, was a similar age are far cheaper than Downing would be at 6.7m. The fact is, like Downing, he is just not good enough IMO.

The Mirror says we've formally gone for Hazard.

I'd love JuanMata here. Statistically hes betterthan Silva was at Valencia at a younger age.

Don't think we're going to be able to get Hazard. Wouldn't complain, mind!

Yeah, Kuyt would have been my choice, with Lucas in second.  Those two were head and shoulders above the rest though and no problems with Lucas winning it.

Juventus have signed Pirlo from AC Milan on a free. Doesnt look good for them signing Aqualani from us so we might expect him back next year.
