This lady was 100 yesterday.

I appreciate any centegenerian will have seen remarkable changes, but this might be closest to the most.

Quite a lady, what a life.

Can't say much more than the others who replied - extraordinary.

These folks are always so low-profile, too. I don't even understand her job description, never mind what she does.

Hard to believe she coped with all the racial stuff that was so openly prevalent back in the day.

Hats off to her.

Wikipedia must be the best thing ever.

As a kid, we were assailed by adverts in print media (there was no other form of media then really) by Encyclopedic Brittanica....

Cost a fortune, too, even back then it was $100 or whatever.

Now? Presumably EB have gone busto, as we have Wikipedia. Best thing ever. And it's FREE.

I spend soooo much time on Wiki, it's ridiculous really, but every minute is well-spent.

There was a brilliant TV Show last week about a Conductor - musical conductor, you know, baton & everything - called Simon Rattle. Actually, SIR Simon Rattle, OM, CBE.

His influence helped to prompt the regeneration of Birmingham City Centre back in the 80's, & no City needed regeneration more than Birmingham at the time.

From there he went to the Berlin Symphonic - considered the world's foremost symphony orchestra - before eventually ending up at the LSO. Must have earned a fortune along the way, too.

And here's the Wiki thing.....

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Rattle

And once we read that, we become intrigued by his full title;

Sir Simon Denis Rattle OM CBE

Err, wtf is "OM".

Well wiki has those little hyper links (?) so one click & we get the answer - OM = Order of Merit.

And what exactly is the Order of Merit?

Quite the thing, it seems.

Only the reigning monarch can award an OM, so it's down to Mrs Queen, & here's the thing - membership is limited to just 24. And before a new OM can be awarded, one of the 24 has to pop their clogs.

Now of course we need to know who the 24 are.

I bet you cannot guess more than 2 of the 24 names.

I know you will all be unable to sleep until you know who they are, so here you go, they are all listed here;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_Merit

And you know what that means - that's 24 more Wiki Pages I have to read.

Apropos nothing really, but I chanced across this bizarre photo the other day, notable as the last photo I can find of me with the much missed Compo.

Where & when? Lake Mead, Nevada, 2007 or 2008 I think. What were we doing? God knows.

I suppose this might count as a Compo photo too - think this was just after DTD opened, 2007/8 or thereabouts.

The excitement was due to Compo - as per usual - getting it in real bad with 5-3 or somesuch & getting there. Worst poker player ever, but most fun.

And, hard to believe, but the news media say these cars were blown like this, by the sheer force wind.

USS Indianapolis (CA-35)

Happy wiki-ing (can't post the link ITT as the CA in the link sets off the  Ac)

If so, before pressing "POST", go to "Additional Options" (below text box) & tick "Don't use smileys".
