Apropos nothing really, but I chanced across this bizarre photo the other day, notable as the last photo I can find of me with the much missed Compo.

Where & when? Lake Mead, Nevada, 2007 or 2008 I think. What were we doing? God knows.

Who is that chubby fellow on Compo's left?

Chubby fella? Fat fu**er more like. Incred how much timber I was carrying at the time.

I had an appointment with the Dietician yesterday, as part of the NHS Rehab plan. My previous visit was in March. She said "very well done Mr Kendall, you've lost 2 kilos since we last weighed you in March", that's what we like to see, nice, steady, controlled weight loss.

I never had the heart to tell her that since the last visit I'd lost 2 stone, then gained a stone & a half, then lost a stone.

USS Indianapolis (CA-35)

Happy wiki-ing (can't post the link ITT as the CA in the link sets off the  Ac)

What a story that is, & it's one I knew nothing of. Once again, Wiki proves its worth.

Some horrific thoughts of that disaster. Imagine being in the sea for 3 days, watching some of your companions being killed by sharks, & not knowing if, any moment now, the invisible shark beneath us is gonna kill us. Almost better to die quickly than endure that.

The Captain was Court-Martialled & found guilty of negligence, but later pardoned. It must have weighed dreadfully on him though, as we read;

The guilt that was placed on his shoulders mounted until he committed suicide in 1968, using his Navy-issued revolver. McVay was discovered on his front lawn by his gardener with a toy sailor in one hand, revolver in the other. He was 70 years old.

What a God-awful thing war must be, & for all our moaning & groaning, thank goodness the current generation have not seen a World War.

Finally as always, Wiki taught me a new word;

Desquamation

Which is a posh word for skin peeling, which many of us experience after sunburn.

It's possible I'm more than a little odd in this, but I always thought picking at peeling skin was one of life's great secret pleasures. It was like Twiglets (once you start you can't stop), picking away at peeling skin was unbelievably pleasant.

Going back a while - 10 or 15 years maybe - there was a 2 year spell when almost every athlete - runners, footballers, rugby player, jockeys, whatever - wore a nasal strip. They swore it helped them breathe better.

Then, just like that, almost everyone stopped wearing them. A few still do, but not many.

Think it was a great example of how we, as amateurs & spectators, like to copy what our sporting heroes do. If they wear it or do it, then I'll do the same.

I suppose football fans wearing replica shirts is in the same category.

It is worse in the USA, where so many of them wear grotesquely oversized basketball or hockey gear.

Not saying it's wrong, or bad. Seems a bit silly though.

Love the Order of Merit post tikay.

Like a Noahs Ark of good eggs.

Yes, that's about it.

Of the 24, I had heard of exactly 13.

Was up until 3am this morning reading all their Wiki pages. Fabulous stuff.

Smiled that the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles were included in the 24.  A bit like when the Queen was looking round for the most worthy person to succeed her as the head of the Commonwealth...

Yes, those 2 names jumped off the page, &, in a way, spoilt it.

I guess it might well be one of those tradition things, where the Heir or consort gets a Mulligan.

Ignoring those 2, (& let's not forget they do their bit for charity & have a dreadful life) all 22 were worthy inclusions.

If I had to choose one though, who had changed the lives of almost everyone on the planet for the better, I guess it would be  Sir Tim Berners-Lee. I guess the moot point was did he make his invention accidentally, never realising what enormous power it would eventually wield?

Here's his page;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Berners-Lee

Even more impressive, he has a Wiki page just for the various Honours he has received;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_awards_and_honours_received_by_Tim_Berners-Lee

If I had an Honours page, it would read;

1956 - Acton Wells Primary School, Milk Monitor. Think I peaked too early, it was all downhill after that.

My new work gig is a finance system transformation project for a large construction firm. It's only day two and I've already been told there are about 50 different types of concrete.

Please let my euromillions numbers come in tomorrow.
