"marvel" was indeed powdered milk. Lovely stuff. Invented by the French, you know.

In French 'de mal' would mean something like 'of sickness' which would suggest someone whose clothes mad it look like they were ill.

An Omaha hand came up, it was 6 card Hi-Low, but effectively high Only.
I flopped the abs cocoanuts on this flop.....
I had no clubs, & no other extensions, it was dangler-city.
Before it got to me it went "all-in" 3 times, & it was my entire stack - about £800 at the time (began with £300) - to Call.
What is the correct play here?
instamuck without a seconds thought
what are your thoughts on the 6 card h/l hand when the flop came
You ARE remarkably well-informed Jim!
What can I say? I had the dream hand, something like (not exact, as I forget now) A-2-6-7-8-9, with nut clubs.
There were 3 side-pots & the main pot, two of which were quartered. It was very complicated sorting out the Pot. G-Man (aka Golden Shower) was dealing, so while they were sorting it out, I went outside & had a smoke. I returned 10 minutes later, & they were still sorting the Pots!
I'm not sure, but I think I cleared about £1k in that coup. I left a "nice" drink for the Dealer, plan being that nobody else needed to tip the Dealer for the rest of the night.
Later, & still on a heater, I had the absolute nuts (Tens full) in a Hi-Only game & my heads-up oppo looked like he was gonna pot it for his case money. I flicked up the 10 because I did not want him doing more money. I know that's wrong wrong wrong, but it was just a bunch pf mates having a good time, & I'd won more than enough for one night
.
It's ok, you don't need to tell me I'm a daft soft sod. I know.
The volatility in DC is so big I really ought not to play it, but it is rather fun I do think. I'm afraid I coolered Lalit, as well.
That's just unnatural Tony. It would be like watching a wildlife programme where the lion is about to bring down it's prey....at the critical moment the lion stops and asks the little zebra if they can be friends instead. It's not supposed to be like that. It's not the natural order of things. God will not be happy.

Almost certainly correct. It's hard to explain, but I have no regerts about it. None at all.
Unnatural? Probably.
Your God might not be happy, but mine's cool with it.

Or a local pub where the landlord occasionaly buys a round of drinks for some regulars at the end of the night. Wtf is he thinking, they're going to be paying for one last drink anyway.
Due to the landlords obvious foolishness there is going to be less money in the till on that particular evening.

Yeah, that's a good point. I mean record numbers of pubs are closing up and down the country cos not enough money is going through the tills. Them landlords are seeing their loyal regulars staying at home to quaff cheap booze and smoke fags instead.

One does not wish to be too pedantic but I believe the correct spelling is tatterdemalion
Meaning...wearing ragged clothing
Tatter, as in tattered
Not sure of the derivation of demalion though
One trusts Tighty.
You are indeed right & I mis-spelled it.
tatterdemalion.
And you are correct as to "ragged clothing", sort of. So that's where the "tatter" prefix emenates from. More precisly, it's a well-heeled man wearing - as Thewy was last night - tatty clothes.
The other part is the clever bit. I've no idea how Ralph sussed it, but it's clearly right.
Clues available on request.
Well to be honest Tony, I'm not quite as sure as I was since the correct spelling is tatterdemalion as opposed to the "tatterdelion" on which I had mistakenly based my assumption, although it does still seem very plausible, however not as plausible as previously.

from five minutes poking about online it seems like the etymology of the 'demaillion' bit is unknown, but this looks like the most likely explanation:
The first part of the word, tatter, seems to derive from the hypothesised Old Norse word *taturr, which appears in Icelandic as toturr, and Norwegian dialects as totra. The Old French variation is taterles meaning “rags.” In fact, all these versions refer to rags, scraps, and jagged items.
The second part is thought to be a derivative of the Old French, maillot, which refers to swaddling clothes or simply long clothes, according to Spiers and Surenne’s 1863 French and English pronouncing dictionary. Thus, you get the whole flavor of someone in tattered and torn clothes.

i find language fascinating. it is my great regret that i didnt continue my language studies at uni (i was told i had a natural aptitude for them).
speaking of interesting language bits and bobs my own surname 'Tochel' is, as i understand the hebrew word for 'Tree' (although our family has no connection with hebrew or judaism. contextually it appears in the torah as part of the phrase 'achol tochel' which means 'all the trees in the garden', This was God telling Adam to 'eat freely'.
some people might find that appropriate

Tony, In that game do you think that you would get someone playing soft against you if you were in schtuk one day?
Yes - 100% Phil. In fact it happened 2 weeks back, & I think I Diaried it.
On that occasion, I lost my first pull-up of £300, pulled up anotherr £300, & said "this is it guys, when I lose this, I'm outa here".
I walked the nut-house into a straight flush, & Asif, my oppo, told me not to call, "you are losing, 100%, please don't Call".
I called anyway, & lost, & then Asif paid everyone's Table Charges for the rest of the night.
It's hard to explain these things. You either understand them, or you don't. The rights & wrongs of it are not relevant. It's a game, we are playing fior fun. I can understand, of course, why a guy up to his neck in make-up would not do it.
I have arrived at a very comfy place in poker, though I got there the hard way. Don't tell a soul, Phil, but I actually find the game rather fun by playing within my means, & with decent people.
