Winning both money lists in a year and still being 25/1 for SPOTY in a sub-standard year. What's that all about?

It's an extraordinary achievement, but he just seems to have failed to capture the public's imagination. More of a Faldo than a Seve.

Just how good is Luke Donald? He seems - to me, anyway - to lack a little charisma, but results speak, & what a season he has had.
Whilst discussing his incredible season yesterday, someone said that at one stage of the season, he went 450 holes without three-putting a green. Is that true, anyone know? Seems quite a stat, if true.
It was actually 449 holes. You were close

to win spoty you have to have some sort of appeal outside the followers of your sport, people need to have actually heard of you
I doubt anyone that doesn't follow golf has the slightest idea who he is

Just testing, Dave.
How do you rate him, & is that stat pretty unusual?
How's your golf doing - bad time of year to be in the business, presumably?

To get famous, Luke Donald needs to do well in a tournament that Peter Alliss commentates on - none of these tinpot million-dollar tourneys that Sky have on every week.

With Like Donald being No1 on both sides of the pond says it all really. Ok he doesn't have the personality of a Mcilroy or Clarke but he probably has one of the best all round games around.
Will the 3 putt record be broken? I doubt it.
And as for my game its going quite well been putting in a lot of work for next season which has produced a nice couple of results so far (blatant brag)
Hope to be around a bit more here and there soon.
It was nice to see the burgundy Jacket back

Nigel Mansell won Sports
Personality
Of The Year.
Luke is a born winner. Just a shame he's facing competition from Rory and Big Darren, who won the BBC's only remaining golf tourney of note. Should TID MOF if any justice imo.

because people knew who he was whether they followed his sport or not as is the case I would imagine with every previous winner. in fact he won it twice because his popularity transcended his sport
it's interesting that you highlight the word personality suggesting that mansell had none yet suggest that donald should be in the running for the award while tikay reckons he lacks charisma. I've got no opinion either way, I don't follow golf, have very little interest in it and had no idea he was winning stuff same as almost all of the voting public
donald and dai greene may as well be a million to 1, they can't win
if they did win the vote they'd only get DQed for cheating anyway like happened to that fishing dude

However from that came a Norwich blast from the past, as I was listening to some football quiz tosh yesterday on the wireless, & they were debating the best volleyed goals ever. The answer is irrelevant & subjective, & most people have their own favourite one (I think Goss, for Norwich v Leeds won it), but as an irreverant aside, this one was mentioned, as a half-decent "backheel volley".
Sad I couldn't make it to Newcastle Sir. Got to step in on the 'volley' debate. Yes the Goss thunderbolt is very good but it cannot really compare to the technical quality of:
Van Basten Part 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PPrgGY5YJQ
Van Basten Part 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J_DwsO9bIY
Bale's Volley versus Stoke last year (can't find a decent YouTube of this one but you probably remember it).
Di Canio V Wimbledon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUh-NcHi5ug
Yes totally subjective I know but the technique involved in these, especially the Di Canio goal as his bodyshape from the ball was in completely the wrong place to perform that volley, is wholly superior IMO.

Quality the bits I saw. Never gonna be as good without Earl causing trouble but then Rodney Morris filled his boots. Morris has played this a few times and I never remember him being quite so 'animated'.
