Excuse my fixation of golden oldie football photos, but they are a bit special. No more after this, I promise.

Bonetti

Jennings

Is the striker Bobby Smith in the third one?

What's going off here?

Name the ground, & the goalkeeper.

Clue - after he retired from an illustrious career in football, he moved to the Isle of Mull & became a Postman.

Peter Bonetti?

It looks like The County Ground at Northampton - shared between Northampton Town FC and Northants CCC for years. Had one side of the pitch - known as the Cricket Side, funnily enough - that used to have spectators standiing on wooden boards until H&S stopped them. Latterly it was just left totally open with just a few hoardings.
Eventually a new stadium was built on the outskirts of town.
Presumably the photo was taken in the one season in which The Cobblers played in the top flight, 1965-66.

....is CORRECT.

Tighty is going to be so tilted he never got it first. Serves the lazy sod right, he's still in bed.

Bonetti was a bit special back in the day, & served Chelsea for many a year, playing alongside some iconic players such as Venables & Tambling, & under such diverse managers such as Ted Drake & Tommy Doc. He was in the 1966 World Cup winning squad, too.

As a Northamptonian I had a small edge.

Ralph - I THINK the third one is the great (now deceased) Bobby Smith, but I'd not bet on it.

That is the only word in the English language with all the vowels in alphabetical order, good word n that.

Sorry, not true, another is abstemious - not much chance of poker players knowing that one though. Wink

I had recently retired from bullshit detection but that one I can't let go, not from a journalist

abstemious, arsenious, tragedious, adventious, placentious to name just a few of the many others

that's without the obv responses of facetiously and facetiousness

I see Rod has already picked up on this, he can probably take over as the language bullshit expert in my retirement

Got him - legend! Just like that, Athers.

Invited him ionto the Show, he seemed a bit dubious, & eventually said "OK, give me your business card & I'll let you know".

That'll be a "yes" then. Ish.

Quite a controversial figure as England Captain's go, even a ball-tampering controversy. He was widely known as "FEC", which more kindly souls took @ face value as "Future England Captain", but apparantly, assuming "E" = "Educated" or "English", there were various other interpretations of FEC.

Mike is a superb cricket correspondent for the Times too.

I like him less as a commentator, but as a writer, very very very good

Agreed as to his writing skills.

I never recognized him at first, it was his voice I clicked on to.
