Without the Thames Barrier, this was estimated to have been the London flooding this week

I'm not 100% certain I buy that, but it may be true. It's certainly at least partly true.

It cost around £700 milion to buikd, all told, & would have paid for itself on that single night alone, & many times over. Value for money in Government infrastructure projects does exist then.

There is a certain irony, of course. The Goverrnemt paid for it, and as a result, private Insurance Companies didn't get to charge a hefty premium to insure those many billions of pounds.

Strange world.

FYP

You may not be aware, but the Government pays for flood defences in exchange for insurers agreeing to insure homes.

Ahh, thank you, that makes sense, & seems a perfectly reasonable way to proceed.

You have filled a considerable gap in my knowledge. There may yet be other gaps yet to be discovered.

Isn't the govt paying a fairly recent thing?  ie after the building of the barrier?

I thought that it was only brought in because insurance cos were refusing to cover a lot of areas due to the recent increase in flooding (or recent increase in twats building houses on flood plains).

I didn't mean to imply that the Thames Barrier was built just to appease Insurers.   The Government scheme I linked to has only been in place for a few years, and is changing (see story linked).  It is linked to this story as if the barrier wasn't there, some of the homes marked in blue would be fairly hard to insure at a cost the occupiers were willing to pay.

It is probably untrue that Insurers would suffer long run due to flooding in London.  Premiums will adjust and  in the long run will reflect the risk (plus costs and margins.

I thought it has been made harder to build houses on flood plains in the most recent years, but am no expert.  Maybe relaxations in planning laws have changed that again, but I really don't know.

Insurers agreed to cover houses close to watercourses, but the excess on a flood damage claim is rather eye-watering.

I have to question the exclamation mark. Is the news quite so dramatic as to require the spring onion at the end?

It's official - The UK CONCRETE Show moves to Hall 5!

Pete bathed he girls on Wednesday night and the three of them made a terrible mess playing with a wind up turtle in the bath.

On Thursday Pete went of to do the Wilf Gilbert ( a chain of independent bookmakers in the Midlands ) refund on lose offer. They pick a race and if you lose your bet then they give you a free bet to the same value up to £100.

We have been doing this offer for a couple of months now and have been running well above EV. ( EV is about £70 ) .

I usually pick the horse to back but was busy so told Pete to pick a horse with odds between 7/1 and 10/1 with the odds as close to Betfair as possible.

The race was the 2.20 at Newcastle and the horse he picked was Ruby Bay 7/1. The Betfair odds were 8.2.
Then he saw Snapping Turtle. He put the £100 on Snapping Turtle. He asked for the price and the guy wrote 33/1 on the slip. The Betfair odds were 80/1.

Ruby Bay led all the way round. Pete said ' I thought she'll kill me ' .

Ruby Bay was pipped on the line by.........................

SNAPPING TURTLE.

Should take care of the girls Christmas presents !!

Today, I've been out all day, on "leisure" stuff.

In total, I travelled on TEN train journeys. 5 to reach my destination, the same 5 to return.

TWO of these journeys in each direction - so 4 in total - were on rail lines that only had TWO stations, one at each end.

What were the two rail lines that only went from, A to B & back?

The "10 train" journey began & ended at Hampton Court Station.

Yup, the Hampton Court train was your clue, that was the easy one.

Just one other now.

The only other line I can think of that has just 2 stations on it is Cardiff Queen Street to Cardiff Bay - but somehow I can't see you going all the way to Cardiff and back for leisure.

I think we chatted about this once before Tony, not sure if you caught any of the Asian golf this week but they were playing Amata Springs which has my favourite golf hole on it. The 17th is a par three island green where the players hit their tee shots and then take a leisurely boat ride to the green. The amazing thing about the hole tho is that it has a floating moveable green that has an underwater pulley system that allows them to alter the length of the hole by moving the green to different positions on the lake.

Did it start from Earl's Court?
