Not entirely sure how I'm gonna blog this year.

I'll be doing (started already) blogs for Next Door, but they include spammy stuff, & is a different audience really, so I'll mix & match I think.

Think I'll stick the relevant stuff here, piecemeal, for starters, then a link to the Next Door thing.

The Flight

For the geeky types, VS043, Virgin-Atlantic, a refurbed Boeing 747-400, with no less than 463 passengers (or pax as they are known in the trade) + crew. All seats sold.

I saw 8 or 10 poker sorts on the flight, headlined by none other than 2013 WSOP Bracelet winner Barny Boatman, who is booked into the Wynn. MBN.

Jeez, the Wynn is a beautiful building. Expensive, though. It has a near-identical twin, too, cleverly named "Encore".

Also spotted on the flight were Jamie Roberts, Kev Allen, & none other than "The Tall Anon", aka Pete Linton. Pete will be mainly playing cash, but I think he plans to play the $1,000 WSOP PLO on Wednesday (tomorrow), which is bad news for me. Pete has a range wider than the Grand Canyon.

sniff sniff sniffff snifff SNIFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Just my luck, to spend a 10 hour flight seated next to a sniffer. I had the window seat, too, so could not escape his non-stop sniffing. BIG bloke, too, so I decided against having a word.

Pretty sure that handkerchiefs (ideally, white, lined & ironed) are going out of fashion. There should be a law that ALL hankies are white, of course.

He never had a hankie, he just cuffed it. With the sleeve that was on my side. FFS.

Anyway, Mr Sniff never stopped. I recken he sniffed on average once every 2 minutes. 10 hour flight, 30 sph (Sniffs Per Hour) = 300 sniffs.

He balanced his range, too. A few short ones, sniff sniff, some standard affairs, sniffff, with the occasional hero-sniff thrown in, SNIFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF, complete with an appended gargle of nasal fluids. He could even do a sniff version of "She Loves You" by the Beatles.

sniff sniff sniff

sniffffffff snifffff snifffff

sniff sniff sniff

sniffffff snifffff sniffffff,

sniff sniff sniff,

snifffff snifffff sniffff snifffffffffffffffffffffff

Did my head in.

At McCarron, I exited the 'plane rapido, & dashed to Immigration in readiness for the usual monster wait in a bare, drab, unfurnished room where even using a moibile phone will get you arrested.

And guess who was smack next to me in the Immigration queue? Yup.

sniff sniff SNIFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.

Memorial Day

I arrived yeseterday, Monday 26th, & as that is the last Monday in May, it is, in the USA, Memorial Day. The American people take these things very serious, & rightly so.

To save you reading the Wiki page, it commemorates those who died in the service of their country. Veterans Day is a different gig, that commemorates those who served their country in the Armed Forces.

Much respect to every one of them. Life is good, but it does no harm to reflect for a moment on how we arrived here.

Kid in a sweet shop.

It's the same every year - I count the sleeps pre-Vegas. X weeks, x days, x hours.

For weeks I worry that the flight wil be delayed, that I'll spend 4 hours in the Immigration Hall, & miss the afternoon Tourney @ Binions. I arrive at Gatters @ 6am - for an 11.25 flight. Just in case.

Yesterday went like clockwork, I needed to be at Binions by 4.15 to get in the $200 PLO8 via Late Reg - 4.15 was the deadline, being 4 Levels + the first break. I arrived, breathless, @ 4.14, BOOM!

I was back @ my hotel by 6pm. That's a whole other story.

I know the TD @ Binions quite well, we've been mates a few years, get along just great, & have even shared a few final tables,  "great to see you, bla bla bla", & he is going to play today's $200 PLO, & so we'll share opening Tables, too. (His Twit Handle is " @TDPaulBinions ")

How do I know we'll share opening tables? Welcome to poker the Binions way.

You pay in, & all the seat cards are face up, on the desk. "Choose one Sir" they say. Imagine the hoohah if they did that in the UK, or, perish the thought, on Sky Poker. There'd be some hooting & hollering, eh?

Tourney Report # 1

This was NOT on the stake, I omitted it deliberately, due to an inevitable Late-Reg & likely tiredness straight off the 'plane.

"Brief" would suffice, really.

Very first hand I get dealt bad aces in the Small Blind, (A-A-J-8, 4 suited) so bad I'd decided not even to make up. Luckily, geezer round the back potted it. So that'll do, foldy woldy. If I'm short-stacked & looking for a 2xUp, these are just about playable, if we can get Heads Up, but at this stage, with 30 Bigs, forget it.

I then sit & fold for an entire Level, & the mocking comments have started already.

"You ever going to play a hand, old man?"

I'm used to it, it happens every Tourney I play, but that's just how it is. I don't care what they say. Well actually, I do, it embarrasses me terribly, & damages my already fragile confidence, but I can only play my way, & this limping in every hand lark is not my game at all.

My Table breaks. Good.

First hand this table? A-A-A-J, dd. THREE Aces, sigh.

Small Blind again, & 2 limpers. It's another mucker, but I can't resist, & we see a flop. I'm never Raising with this, out of position. Most limpers are low-drawing, so on the K-10-7 flop, rainbow, no diamonds, I lead out with a bet, & pick up a dwell caller from Cowboy Hat Bloke, an old Vegas adversary of mine over many years standing. I'm pretty sure he has me beat, so I'm done with the hand unless I hit my gin 4-outer. The Ace now would be a fold, of course.

Turn is that very card, the Q, BOOM. (2 hearts now).

I lead again with the abso nuts. Cowboy Hat Bloke gives it a longggggg think, "I always respect you Old Man" (thanks mate),
"but I have a whopper here".

He eventually folds, & shows me a set of 7's. Not sure if I left some value behind there by leading out. But you know how it is, you check, the board pairs, or the third heart arrives, & you kick yourself.

The Tourney trundled on for another hour, & then it all kicked off.

I'm in the BB, 5 limpers @ 400-800 (!), & I have low spanners, 3-4-7-8, with spades.

It came 2-5-6. Well hello......2 spades, too.

I need to keep the A-2 & A-3 limpers in here, I'm almost Guaranteed one end, but I want to build the pot, too, so I lead out. 2 callers, then an over the top heave-ho.

Really?

Mmm. Well he can have A-3, & we are chopping, but I have improvers to both pots.

OK, lets do it.

He had A-3, with nut spades, uh-oh. No spade dealer, no spade.

It came spade-spade.

Well played lads, good game.

It's not the worst play ever, but it's not the best play, either.

We play for scoops, & I had a chance, but he had THE perfect hand, & I was simply playing for half if he hit his (& my) flush, which makes no sense at all. And spadey-spadey meant I never even got half.

Goes down as an unforced error I think. I blame being ring-rusty, & other assorted excuses.

Next case.

Step aside Norman, Hello Tony G

Years ago, Norman Tebbit, a hard-line politician in the Thatcher Governemnt, famously said "on yer bike".

Yesterday, none other than Tony-G, the mouthy poker player, also famous for "on yer bike, son" became an MEP.

Read that again. Tony G is now a Lithuanian MEP. True.

In fact, I say "mouthy", but in real-life, off the table, he's a sweet & gentle man. Bit wide, like, as I once found to my cost when we were briefly Business partners, but life goes on, & we rub along nicely these days, I'm too old to be harbouring grudges. Good luck to him. And Lithuania.

So what was HIS excuse?

OK, these guys are street performers, & we may forgive them.

So what's the excuse of the guy far left of picture, strolling along in that hat-thong-trainers combo?
