Anyway, the point of going to Chillon was to see the ornate Chateau de Chillon, once owned by the Savoy Family.

Note how amazingly good my photo is. Bet you can't tell which photo is mine, & which came from google Images.

The lyrics of the song tell a true story: on 4 December 1971 Deep Purple were in Montreux, Switzerland, where they had set up camp to record an album using a mobile recording studio (rented from the Rolling Stones and known as the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio—referred to as the "Rolling truck Stones thing" and "a mobile" in the song lyrics) at the entertainment complex that was part of the Montreux Casino (referred to as "the gambling house" in the song lyric). On the eve of the recording session a Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention concert was held in the casino's theatre. In the middle of Don Preston's synthesizer solo on "King Kong", the place suddenly caught fire when somebody in the audience fired a flare gun into the rattan covered ceiling, as mentioned in the "some stupid with a flare gun" line.[9][10] The resulting fire destroyed the entire casino complex, along with all the Mothers' equipment. The "smoke on the water" that became the title of the song (credited to bass guitarist Roger Glover, who related how the title occurred to him when he suddenly woke from a dream a few days later) referred to the smoke from the fire spreading over Lake Geneva from the burning casino as the members of Deep Purple watched the fire from their hotel. The "Funky Claude" running in and out is referring to Claude Nobs, the director of the Montreux Jazz Festival who helped some of the audience escape the fire.

I'm not sure all that is true, sounds like bollox to me, but I'm reasonably sure Mr Glover was smoking something rather stronger than Embassy # 1.

Go on then , i'll bite.   Which bits are bollox ?

God Bless you Natterley.

Back at work now, so no more Trip Reports.

I had planned to visit CERN, but had not realised you had to book in advance, & it was fully booked all weekend.

It just seemed all a bit apocryphal to me.

Might be true I suppose, but I'd not bet on it.

My Contract was renewed this week, too, so that's me sorted for another year I guess. Truth is, if they want rid, or I want to walk, the Contract is meaningless in a way, but it sort of feels nice to be wanted, especially at my age. I've become incredibly conscious of my age, & declining mental powers. (More to follow on that.....).

Good to hear that your contract was renewed. Julie and I were watching the show last week and reminiscing about the "old days" on Sky. You and Boycie were presenting/analysing, I believe.

Its a pity that Sky only do live shows 3 days a week now but I assume the cost of them is not cost-effective for the money it brings in?

It just makes no sense, economic or otherwise, to transmit "Live" more than 3 nights per week, they get pretty much the same bang from 3 nights as 7, & Live TV is hellish expensive, which is probably why other sites don't do it.

The Contract they renewed was not my TV one, that's separate, & is not a Contract as such, just an "Agreement". It says, in effect.....

"We will use you if we want to, when we want to, for an agreed fee, for which you will do this that & the other".

There is no "security" as such, you just get an e-Mail every month (or not) advising if they need you, & on what dates, the following month.

Over 8 years, many Presenters & Analysts, scores of them I'd say, have come & gone, & there is always a bit of a stink when someone no longer appears, "why has x been sacked?" sorta thing, but it's not like that, nobody has any contract which commits them for a term, it's completely "as & when, or if, needed".

I would think my TV time is nearly up now, I'm a bit north of the demographic, (I'm at the "prolific ear hair" age) but no complaints, I've really enjoyed it.

If you & Joobs really do enjoy the Shows, you ought to tune in at 8pm (no later...) tomorrow evening, they have a bit of a surprise in store....

Gary Glitter was in court again last week, on charges of "sex abuse".

Quite surprised he chose to dress so flamboyantly. If you were up on similar charges (God forbid) surely you'd dress a little more conservatively, or even respectfully?

Struck me as very odd.

Earlier this year, in June, he adopted the same dress sense, that time with sunglasses. The Judge ordered him not to wear sunglasses in court again, though I'm not sure why that would be, other than not very rerspectful perhaps??

I suppose his wardrobe reflects his stage personna, he was never a "quiet" dresser, though you'd think he'd be a little more sensible when he needs to get the right side of a Jury.

Perhaps a little belatedly, but I am at last coming to terms with "new language".

It used to be the case that the meanings of words never changed, & no new words were permitted.

Now, it's new words & phrases all the time.

bitcoin (don't like, but it's a real thing)

YOLO

totes amazeballs (LOVE that).

Pleno frequently uses a phrase which sits very uncomfortably with me, but a lot of blondes (& maybe others) are using it now, too, partly I suppose because it's cool to copy a "hero".

very fun

I get "fun, "great fun", "enormous fun", but not "very fun".

It just feels so wrong, as if it breaks some rule of grammatical construction.

I'll get there eventually, by which time it'll be as outdated & cheesy as met. I never got that one either. Give me time.

I was a huge Gary Glitter fan back in the day, I had all his songs on 8 track and I could do all the moves. I even had 6in platform soles. (I flirted with the idea of black eye liner but decided it would lead to real black eyes).

Now I can't even listen to his music.

people are such arseholes.

I think if you left not of your own volition, there would be a rather large protest from the Sky regulars.

We will try and check out tomorrow's show definitely. Julie coincidentally found her DVD from the night she was a guest on the show (I think with Snatiramas?) and that is something I do miss - the opportunities for Joe Public to appear if they wanted to/were successful on application. The live shows seem geared to more pros/serious amateurs these days and as such aren't as interesting for people like myself/Joobs who enjoy the community side of poker.
