Union Station, Los Angeles, cont'd.
This place really oozed class.
The Waiting room was like a church, no music, no PA system, no announcements, & everyone whispered.

There's a PLO8 at the Nugget Tuesday too at 11am. If you run badly you could play two in the same day!
Might see you at Venetian, I was planning a casino crawl up and down the strip playing cash sessions in as many card rooms as I can, but have had a flare up with my heel problems so might just find a decent game and sit in that
Lol, I hate to sound like a hypochondriac, (I'll have neuralgia next) but is your heel problem anything to do with plantar fasciitis Simon?
Yes Tom . I had a major attack two days before flying out, was in hospital as it felt like i had broken a bone. I was happy it was just plantar not a fracture. Ice packs and massage helps but i had been ok here until Friday, probably sitting in a poker tourny for longer than usual
I started to develop mild symptoms of plantar fasciitis about 3 years ago Simon. My Doctor said it would go away within a few months but it has slowly got worse. I'm now at the point where it hurts all the time when I walk and I can't manage more than a few hundred yards before I'm in extreme discomfort. It seems to seize up over night and when I get out of bed I can't put any weight on it at all. As you know I'm a very out doorsy person and this has put a severe crimp in my life.
I've had a cortisone injection and that worked great for a couple of weeks, and then it wore off over night leaving me worse than ever. I've been to a physiotherapist and a podiatrist, I've had inserts in my shoes and I've done all the stretching and massaging. nothing seems to work.
Any advice you could give me would be most welcome.

These are some of the famous "named" Amtrak Express Trains that run to & from Union Station, bit like we have "Cornish Riviera Express" & the like.

Those who saw the film "The Sting" will recall much of it was set on the Sunset Limited. It runs from New Orleans to Los Angeles.

I've had a few bouts of plantar over the last ten years or so. Ibuprofen helps, as do a couple of exercises.
If your doc hasn't suggested any then ask why.
They aren't particularly physical btw, even I managed them.

Thanks Dave. I have done, and still do the exercises and I've had several courses of different anti inflammatory tablets, including Ibuprofen.
I just can't figure why it wont get better.

Soon, too soon, it was time to board, & go up to the platforms & see the magnificent trains.

In America, they seem to make everything big, over-engineered, & this impression of size is accentuated because, unlike in the UK, where the platforms are a metre above the track, in America, the platforms are almost down at track level. Gives a vastly different perspective.

Look at those locomotive bogeys. If that does not arouse you, you need to go see a Doctor, or get some Viagra.

The train rumbled through the sprawling outskirts of Los Angeles for what seemed an age. Los Angeles is a big place.
It was woo-woo-ing, & ding ding dinging, & we passed a Baseball Stadium called Angel Stadium of Anaheim, LA Angels, who are in the American League.
What we were waiting for though was a sight of the sea, the Pacific Ocean.
One big headache was the weather. It had drizzled in LA, & on the train journey is was dull & overcast.
For reasons which will become apparent later, I badly needed the sun to shine.
I kept looking at the sky, it was grey & heavy, & I was almost willing the sun to shine.
And then, suddenly, miraculously, at one & the same time, the grey skies cleared completely, just as the sea came into view.
YES YES YES.

And then, all too soon, we had arrived, at Oceanside, Southern California. (Or "SoCal" as it is known in those parts).
A momentous afternoon was in prospect, & everything was set.

What happened to that pain you suffered in your backside a few years back, Tom?
Refrained from leaving you an easy tap in by asking about what happened to that pain in the arse?
