its interesting that Murdoch/Fox should chose now to pay a 40% premium for the 60% fo Sky it doesn't own, with profitability crimped by the content rights war

Fascinating time to do it, but he rarely makes a mistake in these things, does he?

It spooked a few players Next Door too, God knows why as it won't make a dot of difference to SB&G.

The enlarged Group will still own 20% of SB&G, which, if it is carried in the books at assumed cost, is a windfall profit waiting to happen. No idea when that will be, but it will be sold on at some point.

Was playing at the Southampton Grosvenor the other night and was made aware of a rule change. A female novice player picked up a handful of chips and literally sprinkled them one by one over the line like a farmer sowing seeds in a field. The screams of strinngggg were deafening...floor was called...and confirmed this is not a string bet. The more senior players at the table seemed dizzy with disbelief, almost like a loved one had died.

Yay, at last, the dumbest rule in poker is revoked.

a nice musical?

Ha, behave.

Umm, yes, actually, it IS a musical of sorts, though not exactly The King & I, or 7 Brides for 7 Brothers.

I wanted to take Gill out somewhere for a treat, as we don't do Xmas presents & that nonsense, & I have to work a fair bit over Xmas, so I thought I'd best try & earn a brownie point or two And we just adore going out to different places & stuff, each trip is a little adventure in itself.

So I firstly booked Afternoon Tea at The Wolseley - very posh that, I'm told Kate Middleton (who?) & The Queen are regulars there. Was a right palaver finding somewhere, they were all booked up until Mid January.

Once I'd done that, I thought I'd round off the trip with a Theatre experience, as Gill has never been to a West End theatre, though we did do Richmond Theatre once.

And booking theatre tickets is SUCH a pain, the websites are dreadful & they spam you to bits.

Anyway, after a bit of searching, I found this. I imagine I will be bored to tears, but I just hope I don't sulk, or get mardy, which I am inclined to when I do things I don't really want to. Gill will love it though, that's the main thing, so I'm actually going to make the effort to try to enjoy it.

Apparently, the musical instruments are brooms, dustbin lids, paper bags & so on. Marv......

At least it will be upbeat, & smiley-wiley.

I tried to book Afternoon Tea at The Goring Hotel, but it was 1) fully booked & b) £85 chuffing quid per head, so that was a no go.

In the process of researching the place, I stumbled across the name of the General Manager, who is a larger than life personality, & a man of considerable substance.

google is a thing of wonder, & it turns out he is quite the character. His name is David Morgan-Hewitt, & I'd rather like to meet him if chance arose.

A man who appears to be happy in his own skin, so to speak. Good for him.

I have no idea why, but the 2nd photo amuses me greatly. Terrific photo.

Sorry but missed that docu about the closure of Kellingley. Why were those big tough miners crying? Because they couldn't see their friends in a professional capacity anymore?

Yes. Kinship, them against the world, but not no more, that sort of thing.

Great big ugly Yorkshire miners in floods of tears. Was a most peculiar thing to see. But understandable.

Hmmm their kinship was so strong it took a hole in the ground to sustain it and without the mine their kinship was no more.

Sound like a bunch of big jessies Wink

Perusing this morning's copy of the Plymouth Herald, as I always do (readership 2, that's the much-missed hector & me) I came across this weird story of shoals of fish washed up on the shore at Marazion, which is the land adjacent to St Michaels Mount.

http://www.plymouthherald.co.uk/hundreds-of-thousands-of-dead-fish-have-washed-up-on-a-beach/story-29992534-detail/story.html

And the weird thing is that the dead fish did not appear to be rotten - there was no smell of rotting fish - but the gulls were ignoring them. Surely the gulls would normally be all over a free meal like that?

Likely explanations from dead fish washed up on shores experts welcome.

If they were starfish, if course, we could throw them back, & nobody, even on blonde, would get cross.

By coincidence, I think the last hotel to feature here was the Belvedere too.

So I had to look it up

Belvedere

noun
1.
a building, or architectural feature of a building, designed and situated to look out upon a pleasing scene.

The origin is latin

1590-1600; < Italian: fine view < Latin bellus fine + vidēre to see

Eat your heart out Tal.

A 101-year-old man has been jailed for 13 years for committing 30 child sex offences.

Ralph Clarke, of Erdington, Birmingham, is thought to be the oldest person convicted in British legal history.

Heard this on the radio yesterday and initially I thought what's the point in sending such an old guy to prison after all these years. Then they starting quoting the victims and my thoughts immediately changed to it should have been longer.

These stories of historical abuse seem to be coming out daily. I wonder with all of the news and attention they receive now will similar stories still be coming out in say 40 or 50 years or are we now are in a era were people/children do not stay quiet about this happening to them.

Eureka

JR, great to see you.

What a thoroughly bizarre looking thing that is.

How are you, where are you, what are you up to these days? You still running Eureka with 'Stars, or have you moved onwards & upwards? What does the future hold?

Pardon my awful memory, but I seem to recall you are a Dad now, is that correct?

You must be pretty proud of your first child - the GUKPT - which is now in Season 10 I believe. Well done you. It was uphill at first, but it survived & thrived despite a rapidly changing poker environment.

I still think your previous Promo when with Blue Square was one of the best Live Poker promos ever - the Blue Square Unusual Suspects.

I vividly remember the launch event, in a sort of club above Sir Clive Sinclair's flat in Trafalger Square, it was in October 2005. Sir Clive came down to watch, but fell asleep in an armchair with a glass of whisky still in his hand.

The initial Unusual Suspects were....

Simon Nowab

Burnley John

Joe Grech

At It Bradley

Mickey Wernick

J P Kelly

Stuart Nash

James "Flushy" Dempsey.

Jen Mason.

Players were eliminated after each round, & the early rounds were in UK casinos.

Then the 4 (?) survivors went to Helsinki, & you & I dealt "double dealer" heads up to Burnley John & Jen Mason in the foyer of the Grand Casino Helsinki, with Jen prevailing.

We then headed to Monte Carlo EPT & eventually Deauville EPT (might have been the other way round, I forget), with Jen as the last survivor. She was busted on the bubble by Jonny Texas Hewston, Jen's Q-Q v Mr Hewston's A-K.

Here's the photo of Jen, resplendent in her Mrs Merton jumper, with that typically mischievous glint in her eye, awaiting the flop to be dealt on her exit hand.

Note a young looking Flushy - with a full head of hair - looking on.

I hope you are proud of what you have achieved in poker Mr Raab  - you should be. You are one of the few who genuinely made poker better, & contributed immensely to the boom.

Oh what memories.
