Commentary is quality though. "Hope I've got enough film left for the crash. I shouldn't say that really, should I?"

This thread reminded me of the airport at Maho Beach, St Maarten. Played poker out there a few years ago, the casino is about a two minutes walk from where this clip was taken. Nice beach, if you don't get blown away by the planes taking off.

As the plane lumbered along the runway, seemingly barely moving, & the runway end approached, the ATC geezer says "any time you are ready mate"......
But you must tell us what a "short field take off" is please. Yes, we guessed it's a take-off from a short field (runway), but specfically, what does that mean?
When I have flown (as a passenger!) from "short fields" - Gibralter for example, which is seriously short, & scary, or Waterford even, the 'plane sort of revs up at the start of the runway with it's brakes hard on, then, brakes off, & whoosh!
Is that a short field take off?

Blatant "I played poker in St Maarten" post imo.

Loving the original bird strike video that started this little chat.
I was on a plane about 15 years ago that suffered a bird strike on take off and was lucky enough to be sat in one of the seats over the affected engine.
The noise when it hit was unbelievable. It was at that speed when the plane was just about to take off but the pilot managed to abort which meant more noise as he slammed all of his breaks on.
The thing I didn't appreciate were all the warning lights that lit up around the engine, Why do they have to make them orange?? The first thing you think of when you see them is FIRE!!!!
Btw. Corfu airport is not the place to be for a 24 hour delay while they fly a 747 from Manchester to bring you home.

Trust me, Mombasa Airport is worse. I rate Mombasa Airport below even Luton. That's hardcore bad.

Every time I need coffee & visit a Motorway Service Station at the moment (I almost never go to Shops), all I hear is bloody Christmas music, seriously naff stuff, White Christmas, Noddy Holder, John Lennon, bla de bla de bla.
Today, in Leicester Services, I heard, at ear-splitting volume, a ditty that went like this.
"
We have lights on the Christmas Tree,
Ho Ho Ho, Hee Hee Hee
".
(Repeat chorus 23,000 times).
FFS.
Only 14 days till it's not Christmas any more.

Yeah basically that's it you hold the breaks and apply full power then release the breaks and roll when you hit Vr (rotation speed) you take off and pitch for Vx (best angle of climb) as opposed to Vy (best rate of climb) which is what you would usually use once at safe alt you would then switch to Vy. You would also use flaps if necessary during the take off roll.

Some days, I can search the newspaper & see nothing that catches my imagination. Today, they are full of great stuff.
Byron already flagged up the story of the poor lady who died from drinking too much water - 4 litres in 2 hours, I believe, & it caused her brain to swell up & killed her within hours.
She was on the increasingly popular "LighterLife" Diet Plan, which many blondes have used successfully. No blame was, or should, be attached to the makers of "LighterLife", she just overdosed on water.
But, looking at the story sideways, two thoughts struck me.
1) Who'd have thought you could die from drinking too much water? (Don't tell the Zimbabweans that). Water is such an amazing thing - it deserves a Post all of it's own. We can't live without it, but it can so easily kill us, in so many ways.
2) The "LighterLife" plan, in essence, says this. Cut your calorie intake to 650 (or whatever) per day. And drink a lot of water. Oh, & buy & drink our special liquid-based "Diet Supplement". Or, in plain English, eat less, & only drink water. All yours for £66 per week, apparently. How extraordinary is the human mind - because, really, it's just psychology that makes this product successful. Very clever psychology. Please understand, I'm not knocking it, from my portly & overweight frame, I just marvel at the tricks the mind can play on us, for better, or for worse. Eat less, & lose weight. Pure genius.

You lost me a bit with jargon there, but I did notice it seemed to take off very "flat", with a frighteningly shallow rate of climb.
I'll take the train I think, that was scary.

There are quite a few people who do marathons who die from hyponatremia. Usually the slower runners, who don't actually need to rehydrate as much and they effectively dilute the sodium in their body (which causes the brain swelling amongst other symptoms). Much better to drink the sports drinks with the electrolytes, or have a bag of crisps with your water if you're going to drink that much.
