Out of the Blue is probably the most played tune by the Central Band after the Royal Air Force march past.

The RAF march past, I believe is the only march past without a "title" i.e. The Royal Navy march past is titled "Heart of Oak"

It appears that the British Army itself doesn't have a March Past as each regiment has one of their own.

Another piece of drivel for you. Did you know that my former Regiment - The Royal Scots where the only regiment to have two march past tunes?

Dumbartons Drums being the main tune, however when Royalty was present it was always "Daughter of the Regiment" in honour of Queen Victoria being "born into the regiment" her father Prince Edward the Duke of Kent being the Colonel of the regiment at that time.

In the area of Services Bands, Regimental Tunes, March Pasts, etc.....

When Dad was alive, he & I used to sit & watch, on Black & White TV I think, "The Trooping of the Colour", which is a much more complicated ritual than anyone (non-Services background) could possibly imagine. It is just so splendid, so British, so charismatic, so iconic. Various Regiments & their Brass Bands all did their umpey-pumpey stuff, but, & this always seemed so odd to me, they did sort of light-hearted versions of modern music, too.

Anyway, the whole thing, from start to finish, was just perfect, faultless, not a thing you would change. The splendid uniforms & associated apparel, so brightly polished, the horses, so well-trained but still sometimes getting a bit lively & restless, the "setting" - how magnificent is Horse Guards Parade? - even the crunchyness of the gravel.

For some reason, I could not help bursting into tears every time I watched it. (As I still do if I watch that, The Last Night of the Proms, & The London Marathon - just the amateuers mind). If we have anything to be proud of in Great Britain, those things seem to sum them up so beautifully.

Anyway......it was my ambition to get tickets for the bleachers in HGP on the Trooping of the Colour day, (HM The Queen's Birthday), & with a bit of underhand jiggery pokery, via some touty peeps, I eventually secured a pair of tickets for it one year, & took Dad along. I never told him where we were going, just said "it's a surprise", & the look on his face when I eventually fessed up was magic. One of the happiest days of my life.

He died early, but we did most of the things together that Dads & grown-up Sons should. All Sons should remember that. Dads are special, & you only get one.

Sigh, this is my day off, I'm resting up today, to recharge the batteries, & you've started me spouting off stuff & nonsense now.

PS - This Forum depresses me so much sometimes, with unprovoked attacks on decent people, & I get so down about it, & this week has been as bad as it's ever been. But this morning I had THE most wonderful PM from a long-time lurker but rare Poster, who clearly loves the oddness & "family-ness" of (parts of) blonde, & that, & this thread this morning, have cheered me up no end.

Very scary indeed. I understand and accept that language evolves, but written English in a work environment needs to maintain some standards to ensure common understanding, correct delivery of requirements and so on, especially with a multi-national customer base. If people can't do the basics, to put it in the vernacular, we're ****ed!

I work in IT Geo, and proper written English is necessary there as well, especially in support functions. Diagnosis is difficult if people can't communicate well enough to tease out proper information from users, and can't write well enough to translate that into an update that leaves the resolving group clear about what the symptoms are and what's been tried.

There are many new skills compared to when I left school in '82, but reasonable basic literacy is still a core requirement for anyone in an office environment. IMO anyway.

Agreed mate, I left (officially) in '77 and having had 3 sons all gone through their schooling am appalled at what is deemed acceptable within the written word these days.

During my time in the Army, for promotion you needed to do "education" a large part of this was English and use of the language in writing.

I now work with a large pensions company and am appalled on a daily basis at the standard of language and writing used by the youngsters now. We see more and more internet lingo used by the youngsters within comments on customers files, makes it difficult for non internet users to understand and subsequently leads to clients time being wasted whilst attempting to decipher.

In their defence, the pressure put on call handlers and the like to wrap up calls within certain timescales and this being used as a measurement on performance doesn't help and only encourages them to take shortcuts.

The trooping of the colours, never miss it. The work that goes into making this happen each year is immense. It's one of these truly British events, all pomp and ceremony but if you are behind the scenes and see the amount of graft these guys have to put in to achieve the end result it truly is amazing.

Other favourites are the remembrance parades at the cenotaph, the Edinburgh Tattoo and, unfortunately no longer going, The Royal Tournament.

I attended The Royal Tournament in 1980 as an usher, which was used as a celebration of The Queen Mother's 80th birthday. We were all gifted a comemorative coin for the event and I was one of the lucky few to be presented this by the good lady herself when she attended that year. Sadly some moron pinched it from my display in my mess quarter.

The greatest part of the tournament for me was always the Royal Navy gun run competition, which showed us all the grit, bravery and dedication of our forces.

Oh yes, the Royal Tournament! We went to see that every single year, at Earls Court in those days, & that "gun race" thing was always the highlight, that & the motorbike round & round thingymajig.

The Rememberance Parade at The Cenotaph never, for some reason, moved me as much as it should. Peculiarly, seeing Politicians, for once not bickering, but showing respect, impressed too, even Michael Foot one year in that dreadfully shabby Duffle-Coat.

But Trooping The Colour, yes, is the absolute nuts. The effort that goes into it shows, too. It's just perfect, & I bet no Nation on earth can even come close to replicating it.

Poker, it's a game of skill......

It was the very first hand of the Final, actually, & I had about 50% above average. Lalit is BB to my SB, & I'm SB this hand.

Smart Asian Gentleman limps in late position - he's a complete Newbie, but he just loves the newly acquired fun of Tourney Poker, & is beaming ear to ear at having Finalled in only his second or third Tourney. Never underestimate how few people actually enjoy poker, as opposed to being slaves to an addiction, so when you share a Table with one of them, it's just lovely to see their pride & pleasure. Anyway, he has "no idea" of how the game works, & with Blinds at 1,500-3,000, & playing about 15k, he limped. With what, one speculated?

I had K-2 off. Yes, I ought to bin it, or Raise up, but I commit the ultimate sin & just complete. There is a long history between Lalit & myself as to K-2, & I was hoping to win a decent pot with it & then show. It's just banter, & history, between us. Luton midweek Finals are not designed for folks with faces like seaside donkeys, they are simply fun affairs, to be enjoyed, the money is not really relevant.

Lalit checks, but there's some light-hearted verbals between us.

So I'm double-dominated.

And if you think this flop was, given the starting hands, actiontastic......

Then the turn was just hilarious.

And suddenly, chips were flying in every direction.

Bradders went loopy - "K-2? Disgusting!". Not wrong, imo.

AK-man went busto, Lalit lost half his stack, & I was a monster.

It was all into the wind after that, Bradders got me off 9-9 with, allegedly, T-T, & everything sort of went Pete Tong. Eventually, 5 of us - I think - took £800 each, & left £150 to play for, & I was delighted that Rich, who played fast & loose, scooped the left-overs.

£800 is well handy, too, it's like a little pension for me, Luton, & that'll last me a few weeks. Once you get to control the addiction of poker, it's a really enjoyable pasttime. I'm still addicted, but I enjoy small-money poker more than I ever enjoyed big-buck poker. And it's free.

ELKY SETS WORLD RECORD FOR MOST SIT & GO’S PLAYED AT ONCE!

Monte Carlo, MONACO, April 30th 2009 – French Team PokerStars Pro Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier has set the world record for most Sit & Go tournaments in one hour. Hot on the heels of his recent 3rd place finish in the $25,000 WPT Championship in Las Vegas, the record attempt was held as part of the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo.

To beat the record, ElkY had just one hour to open as many $6.50 Sit & Go tables as possible. He then had to finish all the tables he was playing at, and make sure he finished with a positive balance.

ElkY took to the stage with his favourite mouse, his mouse pad and keyboard, and sat in front of four screens. The event was then broadcast on giant screens so that the crowd could watch the action live. The rest of Team PokerStars Pro were also there to show their support, including Isabelle Mercier, Gavin Griffin and Hevad Kahn. Chris Ferguson and French singer Kool Shen were there too.

One hour later, the former Starcraft gamer had crushed the competition and set the new record, with a final score of 62 tables opened and a positive balance of $23.60! This means that ElkY is now the world record holder for the most Sit & Go’s played at the same time, and the record will soon be validated by a jury from the Guinness Book of World Records.

After his performance, ElkY said: “the difficulty in this kind of challenge is to keep concentration and to make good decisions as quickly as possible. I had a lot of pressure: my friends and spectators were there to support me. I didn’t want to disappoint them. Toward the end of the event, when my balance was negative, I was very nervous, but I managed to right the situation. I’m happy to have taken up the challenge and invite all players to try to do better.”
