Someone enlighten me here, do you need to have all the social services checks etc if you get a surrogate have a baby for you. Is it the same as if you are adopting or does the fact that you are buying a baby as such somehow sidestep the social services stuff? Is it different if you do it via the US?  I'm not questioning the fac t that Elton has a baby - that baby will have everything it ever wants which may or may not be a good thing, but I was wondering about the actual process.

except a mother, if I read thiings correctly - reckon most kids like mums and dressing as Mrs Doubtfire don't cut it imo

Hear what you say Glen but this child is wanted and will hopefully be showered with love and affection by his parents. Lucky him.

Yr probably right - I should be less of a cynic but what if the kid cries while Elton's trying to write a melody or arrange some flowers. I've seen Elton in a rage and it's not hoooman

At Christmas there is usually a gift of a book between our family members as we all enjoy reading. I don't read as much since playing poker but still enjoy a good book especially autobiographies. In the past Joo has picked up on books I've mentioned during the year and lo and behold one turns up at Christmas. Well she did it again this year, and to my suprise I unwrapped "A wandering of Gypsies" by Tom and Julie McCready. I started to read it this afternoon and got so engrossed I muted Gillette soccer saturday.

I was gobsmacked to read that your Dad lived for a long time in our area. Hearing the stories happenning in places where later I would play football, go nesting, go drinking, go to work. In fact both Joo and my son Alex work in Chesterton now. In the seventies when I was a short lived apprentice mechanic I did the odd stint at one of my bosses garages in Red Street. I have just finished the book and loved it. A great insight into Gypsie life first hand. I remember the Gypsy hawkers especially the horses coming down our terraced streets peddling their wares. Mum and Nan (who lived next door but one) pretty much always bought something partly because they were Irish, as were some of the Gypsies and partly because of superstition of Gypsy curses if they didn't. Your Mum had a bad time of it with her fathers drinking and parental rows, as it happens so did I, although not so violent.

Anyway Tom I hope you and the family had a great Christmas and best of luck for a prosperous New Year.

I'm off to set up our poker table ready for a home game in a few hours.

15st 1lb

The first few days are great, you lose a little every day. The first red weigh can't be too far off, but I'm ready for it.

LMAO @ Dwayne. (I got it Tom & lol'd).

Re the Elton John thing - I won't get into the whole civil partnership and adoption as that's a completely different matter but regardless of how famous Elton is or how much money he has, I think it's wrong that a 63 year old man should be allowed to adopt a child.

I'm also about to undergo a weightloss regime so keep posting about what's working for you etc.

Yesterday, Mrs Red and the girls ate an entire freshly baked ham with crusty bread and home made pickle. A little later they ate a huge home made quiche (With extra cheese) followed by toffee ice cream.

We won't mention the hot mince pies with cream, the Fox's Special assortment, the Hobnobs, the Toblerone, the Quality Street, the Ferrero Rocher.....

I lost at least ½lb in saliva alone.

Woke up this morning to find two burst pipes in the portacabin (which serves as our washroom/bathroom and kitchen for cooking splattery stuff etc)

More later....
