Non geeks look away now.

This morning my phone was making the low batt warning sound. I checked the level and saw that there was 5% charge left.

I plugged the charger in and almost immediately it went to 60%. I thought it might be a false reading so i unplugged it, switched it off and on, and checked again, still 60%

How could that  happen?

Some weird stuff can happen with batteries - wiki battery memory & if you get it - well played because I don't.

I don't understand gatso, what chance do I have with wiki?

Actually, I have managed to decipher gatso's missive. The word 'Blackout' is a euphemism suggesting that I lost conciousness for a short period thereby allowing my phone battery to charge without my being aware of the passage of time.

Very droll.

Did you know it's not good for your battery to charge your phone for only a few minutes like that?  Batteries have a recycle life of about 1000 charges.  Each time you plug your phone in, you've used up one of your 1k...provided you'd the full lot to begin with.  Best to wait til your phone is low and charge completely if you're hoping to get the most out of your battery's life.

so if I sit next to the socket and plug my phone in for a second then unplug it for a second and rinse and repeat 1000 times I'll be left with a battery that no longer works after just over half an hour?

Dunno, I've not tried it.  Just know what I've been told by the phone crowd and read on the net to support it.  Give it a go and get back to us.

The battery in my old laptop got messed up by having it in when being powered from the mains.  I went through two batteries before just taking out the battery when not using it to power the laptop which solved the problem.

That's definitely true.  If you keep something plugged in beyond the time it takes to charge the battery fully, you'll trash the battery even more if you don't remove it.  And I know that from the constant battle had with Brian to remove his fecking battery if he was going to leave the lappy plugged in.  Eventually his battery was useless.

1 With modern batteries, it makes no nevermind if you part-charge or fully charge them.

2: You can't 'Overcharge' your battery. Modern chargers sense when the battery is full and stop charging.

3: Most laptops these days have an option to switch off battery charging so there is no need to remove the battery.

4: That's it. End of. I'm right and it's my thread so shut up.

5: Puts fingers in ears and goes La la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la.... etc.

Well aren't we the big brave boy today?     Go out in the real world for a few hours and reckons he can conquer all.  That's ok.  Don't listen to me.  See if I care how many items you have to replace after trashing batteries.  Yer a balla high roller anyway, so no odds to you.

I'm feeling speshly down-with-the-kidz techno today with my new optical mousaments.

It hasn't half got a hair-trigger on it compared to my old pedal-powered mouse.

The kidz seem to be going back to old fashioned now. I've been conscripted by a pal's kid to help build a Steampunk monitor & keyboard (and doubtless a mouse).
