What do you think about the title of my soon/yet to be released autobiography?

Excercising My Demons.

It's a stunningly good title Ralph. People will appreciate it more as the story unfolds.

Put me down for a first edition.

I had a visit on my to do list but I happened to be passing a Go Outdoors outlet that was doing a 50% off sale on footwear. I Bought a great pair of Gortex lined leather walking boots. Should have been £180 but got the 50% plus another 10% off with my discount card.

PS- can I say plus something that turns out to be a minus?

I've bought 2 pairs of boots from Jones the Bootmakers and they've both lasted less than a year before I've had to replace them.

They look good, they can come with hefty discounts - but my experience is - they're not good boots.

Hi Ade.

Yes, along with most others of my generation I'm familiar with Joan Baez. She never really did it for me tbh. She wasn't individual enough. She always seemed to be riding someone else's wave.

Aren't places like that great?

The trouble with most towns and cities today is, it doesn't really matter which one you're in, all the shops are the same, a PC world, a Wilco's, B&Q a WH Smith etc etc.. Every one carrying identical stock. So when I do see a 'different' shop, I always go in if I have time.

I know of two old fasioned iron mongers like the one in your picture. One is in Sheffield (God's Country) and the other is just down the road from me in Blaby.

The one in Blaby is called Jeff Hardware. It's owned and run by an Indian family. I don't know why that surprises me, but it does.

Is that what an ironmonger is? I had always assumed it was someone who sold bigger iron things like gates. Never considered it as a hardware shop. Used to be one not far from us. I would say it was such a pure example of the breed, nothing was given its lay name; just its trade name. Everything was labelled as "bodger", "doodah", "jigger" or "knob". Perhaps that's the romantic in me playing tricks with my memory.

It's been replaced with a shop that sells one of everything. You can get nails, hammers, spanners, washers, pipes, washing up bowls, maps of the East, dog treats, ancient scrolls, humbugs, first edition literature and a competitively priced raspberry frappucino. Ok, well most of those things anyway.

It's still a hardware shop, which is nice. I couldn't tell you what anything beyond a nail does, but there we are.

Where I grew up there was a row of shops as follows. Newsagent, Launderette, Hardware store, Barbers, Post office. This was the 60's. Today all of the shops remain trading exactly as they were back then. Pretty, rare I would guess.

Identical old school ironmongers in my town.  Never been in.  Going to go in tomorrow and have a look around!  Established 1934!  Impressive.

I know.  Quite incredible.  Can't imagine too many of their customers ever look at their website.  The two don't really go hand in hand.
