What I meant was they ate them and will continue to do so, but I bow to your superior knowledge and stand corrected.

I actually think that eat(pronounced "et") or ate are both correct.

In the spring I walked the woodland path that I walk every day. The the mud was slowly giving way to to firmer ground and the first shoots of grass were poking through. It made me excited.

Today, the grass was receding and small puddles formed as the firm ground once again turned to mud. It made me feel excited again.
